Cape Town - Having just competed at the 2013 Doha FIG World Challenge Cup a month ago, SA’s top 2 Artistic Women’s gymnasts - Kirsten Beckett and Claudia Cummins (both 17) from Johannesburg Gymnastics Club - continued their international preparation plan for the 2013 Artistic World Championships, by competing at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Ljubljana, Slovenia from April 26-28.
Both gymnasts performed extremely well, improving greatly from their Doha performances. Both attained a place in the vault finals, with Beckett winning a silver medal and Cummins placing fifth in the finals.
With both girls still new to the World Challenge Cup circuit, these results are their best at an FIG World Challenge Cup to date. The results were impressive as the gold and bronze medals were won by Elsabeth Black from Canada and Thi Ha Than Phan from Vietnam, both who competed at the London 2012 Olympics. In addition, Thi Ha Than Phan placed first in the vault at the 2013 Doha FIG World Challenge Cup.
The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) is proud of Kirsten and Claudia’s achievements and send their congratulations to the gymnasts and their coaches.
Beckett and Cummins have their sights set on the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
