Sandes pulls out Leadville 100

Cape Town - Despite being in the lead group of the 2013 Leadville 100 Mile trail race for the first 50 miles, SA trail running superstar Ryan Sandes, unfortunately had to make the very tough decision to pull out of the race due to physical issues.

VIDEO: Ryan Sandes talks about having to withdraw

“I am super disappointed to have had to pull out of Leadville and always prided myself in never having DNF'd (Did Not Finish) a race. This year I have had two DNF's in a row, a huge blow to my confidence, but I am focused and looking forward and getting back on track again,” explained Sandes.

“Yesterday at about 30 miles my hip flexors started tightening up causing my back to start spasming coming down Hope Pass. It left me walking down the last few km's of Hope Pass and at the 50 mile turnaround point I had to make the very hard decision to pull out of the race. I did not think I could get over Hope Pass again with my back spasming. Thanks to everyone for all your support, it means the world to me.”

Sandes will advise when he returns to South Africa what his racing schedule will be for the remainder of 2013.
