SBW v Botha - in Brisbane

2012-10-23 09:33

Cape Town - Sonny Bill Williams has confirmed the date and venue for his fight against South Africa's Francois Botha.

According to the website, Williams, 27, will fight Botha in Brisbane on November 24, after speculation the bout would take place in Durban.

Botha has 48 wins and eight losses - two of those defeats coming in world title fights against Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko - but at 44, the "White Buffalo" is well past his prime.

The former champion has taken shots from some of the best - Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, just to name a few - and, for that reason, he feels the Kiwi rugby/league star is not in his league.

"He's going to have a rude awakening but it will make him a better fighter in the future," Botha said last week.

"Sonny Bill Williams might be a good rugby player but I don't see him as a good boxer. He doesn't belong in the boxing ring. He should go play rugby.

"He's just starting out his career. He's taking a big step up. It's a big risk."

Williams is currently playing his rugby in Japan, after which he is expected to return to the NRL with the Sydney Roosters in 2013.

Since 2009 he has boxed five times, winning all five of his heavyweight bouts. He is the current New Zealand Professional Boxing Association (NZPBA) Heavyweight champion.

Botha is really going to kick SBW's ass. Hope he doesn't do it to quick, we want to enjoy the punishment a bit first.

I honestly think it's going to be SBW's fight. He's still young and very fit! I hope Botha can do it, but Sonny Bill is a freak of nature!

I'm with Tang on this one. Punch-bag-Botha is way past his sell-by date and is just cruising for a bruising. Then again, in heavyweight bouts it's usually just about that one punch. I saw SBW will floor tub-of-lard Botha in the 3rd round.

Botha is an experienced pro boxer, there's no comparison here and SBW's age and physique will not save him at all. Never, he's going down hard!!!

We're about to be entertained by some boxing smutt talk, vs rugby diplmomacy...This will test SBW. Its gonna get interesting pre fight

Francois is to old. There is no doubt that he would have klaped SBW in his younger days, but I fear his age and maneuverability will count against him.

      tang.willemse - 2012-10-23 10:33

      My point exactly!

Please, please Supersport. Please make sure you show this to us live and in HD. I can't wait to see the look on SBW's face when he gets KO.

Even though Botha is 44, he's experience would play a big part in this. Not to mention that Botha is also top fit, he has a great combination of skills and fitness. He keeps himself not only active with boxing, but also MMA to maintain his fitness levels. He would definitely show SBW some real boxing. I do not have anything against SBW, but I have seen his fights, and it is not very convincing. Go check it out, and decide for yourself. Age just a number, experience would count in this fight.

Hope Botha gives this bloke a good hiding. If we cannot beat the AB' at rugby then maybe we can have some one beat one of their guys at boxing?

  • jannie.patat - 2012-10-23 11:57

Yes please. The White Buffalo will take a few shots, but he'll be giving them as well. And SBW will soon find out what it's like to get donnered properly !!

Clearly most of the comments are people that don't know much about boxing. SBW is not a great boxer, but Botha won't keep up. An easy win for SBW.
