SBW in doubt for Botha fight

2012-10-30 07:44

Sydney - Former All Blacks star Sonny Bill Williams on Tuesday said his heavyweight boxing bout against South African Francois Botha was in doubt after picking up an injury playing rugby in Japan.

Williams, who in August quit the world champion New Zealand team to take up a club contract in Japan, injured his pectoral muscle playing for the Panasonic Wild Knights on Saturday.

He arrived in Sydney on Tuesday to prepare for the Botha fight next month but said he needed to have scans on the injury before deciding whether he went ahead with the bout.

"At the moment, it (the fight) is a little bit in doubt," Williams told Fox Sports at Sydney airport.

"I just came back here straight away.... I've got to get some scans and see how the pec is, see the extent of the injury."

Williams, the New Zealand heavyweight champion, is set to take on veteran Botha, 44, in Brisbane on November 24.

Williams, who is on a contract to play 12 matches for Panasonic worth a reported US$1.2 million, crunched his shoulder attempting a tackle on former Western Force centre Gene Fairbanks during Saturday's match.

Banggat!! I think he saw the Buffalo in action and quickly decided to fake an injury :-)

According to the views of some experts it is clear that SBW is in for quite a hiding, the White Buffalo is not exactly an opposition rugby player you can side step. Better cancel the fight to save face Sonny!

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-10-30 08:22

Experts being WP24 bloggers...hahahaha! If you read the overseas article, it states that it not cancelled but may be delayed! Running scared from a fat palooka, what a joke!

      robin.bradley.9803 - 2012-10-30 09:19

Hey Jimmy... Cancelled / delayed.. whatever.. Sonny still a scared little b*tch.. fullstop

      TravieGrif - 2012-10-30 09:19

Lets be honest, Jimmy. His previous opponents have not exactly been out of the top drawer of boxing, have they!!!! His last fight was dubbed (by NZ boxing experts) as a marketing outing and a total farce.

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-10-30 09:43

@Travie, I think you are spot on, that being said I don't think they would fight botha if they knew SBW would lose. It's all about promotion and money and if he wasn't so bloody good with the pill I would call him a joke. Unfortunate that the SBW show is messing with rugby. I do think he is a beast and will probably excell at boxing if he puts his mind to it.

      hamish.drake1 - 2012-10-30 10:18

@ Jimmy - I know he is older now, but this is the heavyweight division. Bouncing around has never been a high priority. Botha is 48-8-3. He has lost to Tyson, Lewis, Moorer,Holyfield,W Klitschko. Not exactly a who's who of jouneymen. Apart from the last 3 fights, a very good record. With all the hype about this fight, Botha may actually get into shape and you will get your wish of SBW giving up boxing...permenently.

  • ileonard1 - 2012-10-30 08:07

Running scared SBW? The white buffalo will end your boxing career!!!

  • heiku.staude - 2012-10-30 08:30

Wow who would have thought that he is a clever too, want hy weet hy gaan gemoer word. A man of many talents lol

  • robin.bradley.9803 - 2012-10-30 09:18

Hahaha SBW is such a Douche... Scared as hell... Sonny.. dont worry, I will probably also run if I see a buffalo coming... Chicken Sh*t

  • Ruca - 2012-10-30 09:34

Botha is 44 years old and lost his last 3 fights. He was a punching bag against Tyson and he is going to be one against Williams. The "White Buffalo" makes SA look like idiots.

      gary.doyle.520 - 2012-10-30 10:08

I think you badly mistaken. Botha knocked out flo simba who was the favourite. Dont even start using tyson as a comparison to what will happen in this fight because thats dumb!!! Botha in different league than sbw. If the fight happens you will see.

      roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-30 10:11

Why would we feel like idiots if we do perhaps lose in any sport. If you feel like an idiot then you must have a very low opinion of yourself. Botha is still a better boxer than SBW and although he is 44 years "old" he has been against better than SBW will ever be.

      roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-30 10:18

If you feel like an idiot because we may lose in any sport, that is your problem. Botha might be 44 years old but I think he will still teach SBW a lesson in boxing and win.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-30 09:51

A good excuse to get out of being pummeled by Botha. By the time they next meet,if ever, then if SBW should win because Botha is now a bit "older," he will have an excuse to say he is better than Botha?

  • burger.geldenhuys - 2012-10-30 10:58

A pectoral muscle takes a long time to heal so I don't think he is running scare as so many state! I truly hope Botha kicks his @ss but to be honest I don't think he will be ready. So that's why the delay.. For recovery and to put up a fight..

  • tony.samuels.35 - 2012-10-30 11:30

He know he's gonna get "moered" by Botha, now he running scared!
