2012-07-14 14:04

London - Former South African rugby league star Jamie Bloem has been arrested in connection with a child sex investigation, police confirmed on Saturday.

Bloem, 41, captained South Africa during the 2000 rugby league World Cup and also had spells in England with Castleford Tigers, Halifax and Huddersfield Giants before taking up refereeing.

"A 41-year-old Halifax man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a child in connection with an ongoing child protection investigation," a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

"He has been bailed pending further inquiries."

Bloem, who also represented Scotland, was expected to break into the Super League's referees panel next season.

This is serious stuff. The law must take its course and come down hard on those who target children.

Wikipedia says...The South Africa national rugby league team are a growing force in rugby league football, South Africa competes sporadically against other international nations because of their location and their absence from any major international competitions. They are ranked twenty-third in the world currently, just behind Estonia and ahead of Jamaica in the world rankings. South Africa to date have competed at two Rugby League World Cups in 1995 and 2000 but to date have failed to win the competition."". So SA ranked behind ESTONIA!! And the media hails him "SA Star" good grief....
