Cape Town - The City of Cape Town is considering bringing a Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao boxing bout to the Cape Town Stadium.
Two of the sport's greatest pound-for-pound fighters, Pacquiao and Mayweather, could finally meet in the ring in 2012 in a fight estimated to be worth about R250m.
Grant Pascoe, the city's Executive Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events & Marketing told the iafrica.com website that the city is seriously considering hosting the event.
"There’s been people asking us to host a big boxing match with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. We are going to definitely look at the options, obviously costs involved in this thing. We are going to look at it. It sounds great."
This comes after Pacquiao on Thursday accepted US rival Mayweather's provocative challenge for a showdown.
The unbeaten Mayweather dared the Philippine icon this week on Twitter to "Step up Punk", attempting to entice Pacquiao into a bout.
Mayweather and Pacquiao previously saw a fight derailed by the US fighter's demands about blood testing, with both boxers accusing the other of running scared.
"I want to fight him. This is the fight the world wants," Pacquiao declared at a news conference in the Philippines with his US promoter Bob Arum.
However, chief executive officer of Golden Gloves Promotions, Rodney Berman, doesn't believe a fight between the two will materialise in Cape Town.
"It’s an economic impossibility, ring side tickets for that fight would be in the region of $5000, that is some R40 000. It’s not even justifiable of a discussion," he said.
Pacquiao, 33, has a 54-3 record with two draws and 38 knockouts, while 34-year-old Mayweather is unbeaten at 42-0 with 26 knockouts.
