Weightlifter stripped of medal for doping

Cape Town - Kyrgyzstan weightlifter Izzat Artykov has become the first athlete to fail a drug test at the Rio Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport's anti-doping tribunal announced in a statement that Artykov, who won a bronze medal after finishing third in the 69kg weightlifting category, has been stripped of his medal after testing positive for a banned substance.

The statement said that Artykov tested positive for strychnine, and confirmed that his medal had been forfeited and he was out of the Olympics.

"His medal is forfeited and he is excluded from the Olympic Games."

The bronze medal now goes to Colombia's Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano who finished fourth behind Artykov.

The gold medal winner was China's Shi Zhiyong and silver went to Daniyar Ismayilov of Turkey.
