Van Niekerk breezes into 400m final

Rio de Janeiro - Wayde van Niekerk has cruised into the final of the 400m at Rio 2016 after finishing second in his semi-final at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday (Sunday morning, SA time).

Van Niekerk ran a time of 44.45 to finish behind Trinidad and Tobago's Machel Cedenio, but the 24-year-old took his foot off the gas in the final metres once qualification had been secured.

Grenada's Kirani James qualified fastest for Sunday's final in a time of 44.02 while America's Lashawn Merritt was second quickest in 44.21.

Van Niekerk, who qualified fifth fastest overall, is set to compete with those two for gold.
