Fifth-placed Akani Simbine misses bronze by a mere whisker in the men's 100-metre final. Jamaican Usain Bolt, rather predictably, takes gold. Silver for Justin Gatlin of the US, while Canada's Andre de Grasse settles for third. Fourth-placed Yohan Blake time was 9:93, Simbine's 9:94 - it was that tight.

Wayde van Niekerk, in lane eight, is up next in the men's 400-metre final. He obliges the vicarious hopes and dreams of South Africans worldwide by clinching GOLD - in a world record time. Van Niekerk becomes the first South African Olympic 400-metre champion in 96 years, after beating silver medalist Kerani James of Grenada and bronze finisher LaShawn Merritt of the US in a monumental time of 43:03 seconds. The US' Michael Johnson held the previous world record - 43:18.

Akani Simbine puts in the run of his life, finishing third in the first semi-final of the men's 100-metre with a time of 9:98. It's an incredibly tough fields, but Simbine does enough to qualify for the final, which will take place in about an hour. The  legendary Usain Bolt, of course, will be in attendance.

A quick punt for the track events coming up later. South Africa's Akani Simbine will be in action in the men's 100-metre semi-final at 2am SA time on Monday morning. Wayde van Niekerk will be in the men's 400-metre final an hour later. Then, 25 minutes thereafter, possibly Simbine in the men's 100-metre final.

Asenathi Jim and Roger Hudson are not going to finish in the medals in the men's 470. Ranked 11th, they're well off the pace.

14 Aug 19:37

Jaco van Zyl ends with an even par 71 on the final round, for two over overall, while Brandon Stone completes a painful all-round nine over. So, no medals for South Africa in the men's individual stroke play.

Update from the fairways and greens in Rio, where Jaco van Zyl has slipped to four over par - and Stone a whopping nine over. Oh dear.

14 Aug 16:59

Kenya have their first medal in the Olympic womens marathon thanks to Jemima Sumgong, who wins in 2:24;04. Eunice Kirwas of Bahrain and Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia clinch silver and bronze, respectively. South Africa's Dina Lebo Phalula and Christine Kalmer finish in 63rd and 96th position, respectively. Flanked by Viktoriia Poliudina of Kyrgyzstan and Andrea Mayr of Austria, Phalula clocks a time of 2:41:46 - and Kalmer 2:48:24.

14 Aug 15:44

Jaco van Zyl is batting back from two over par to draw even on the last day of the men's event. Countryman Brandon Stone, unfortunately is still five over. And to think, Stone started - in the first round - with two birdies.

14 Aug 15:40

The women's marathon is underway. We're about 70 minutes and 20 kilometres in. Ethiopian Mestawet Tufa, who cam second in the London Marathon earlier this year, has just pulled out due to injury. South Africa's Irvette van Zyl, too, isn't competing - due to a stress fracture of the foot. Compatriots Christine Kalmer and Lebo Phalula continue to fight the good fight, though, toward the bottom half of the field at the moment.
