London - Four-time Olympian Roland Schoeman turned back the clock on Thursday morning as he put in a stunning performance in the heats for the men's 50m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics' Aquatics Centre.
Schoeman, swimming in the penultimate heat, won his race out of Lane 1 in a time of 21.92 - the fifth fastest of the 58 swimmers who entered for the event.
Schoeman, 32, was the oldest swimmer to qualify for Thursday evening's semi-finals, where he will line up in Lane 3 of Heat 2, starting at 20:32 SA time.
After his morning swim, Schoeman said, "I've been feeling good ever since the relay (4x100m freestyle relay). It's good to come out and get that one under my belt."
Leading SA bookmakers, Ladbrokes, have Schoeman on offer at 20/1, the seventh favourite for the title, while team-mate Gideon Louw - who qualified for the semi-finals with the joint-11th fastest time of 22.12 - is available at 66/1.
