London - An estimated global audience of one billion people are expected to watch the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics at the Olympic Stadium, while 60 000 lucky ticket holders will cram into the stadium on Friday night - including Sport24 Editor Garrin Lambley.
The ceremony’s pre-show/audience warm-up will start at 21:12 SA time, with the main ceremony commencing at 22:00. The spectacle is expected to finish at 01:30.
The ceremony will be produced by the Oscar-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire", Danny Boyle, who was handed a £27m budget to work with.
Some 10 000 participants, mostly volunteers, will take part in the ceremony, with reports of a 86-song setlist, including Adele and The Beatles, and more controversially "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols.
