Olympic swimmer saves boy

2011-01-21 08:09

Johannesburg - Deaf Olympic swimmer Terence Parkin saved a seven-year-old from drowning after he reportedly got sucked in by a swimming pool vent at a Johannesburg gym, The Star newspaper reported on Friday.

The daily said the boy's arm got stuck in the vent around 16:00 on Thursday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said paramedics were called to the scene in Craighall Park to find that Parkin had already started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

"It is thought that the boy had been submerged for nearly three minutes and was unresponsive when plucked from the water," Wicks said.

"They [paramedics] arrived to find that the boy had been pulled from the water by his swimming coach, South African Olympic swimmer Terence Parkin."

The boy was taken to the Garden City hospital and was in a stable condition.

Wicks said he could not confirm The Star report that the boy had been sucked in by the vent.

Parkin won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics.

Well done for saving him. Give that man a Bells! I have to wonder why the boy was not being supervised by the same coach that rescued him. I have heard of drowning referred to as the silent death due to the inability of the person drowning to raise the alarm. This would probably have been exacerbated by the fact that the coach is deaf and that there are not many gyms where it would be quiet enough to be able to hear the struggle anyway. Speedy recovery young lad.

Never swim alone, or allow anyone else to. A person can drown right nexto you. You will hear nothing. Someone must be watching at all times.

This is rather alarming. I am not sure which gym this is but ever since Virgin started charging for child care the amount of kids dumped at the pool unsupervised has got out of control. What would have happend if this child was not in the custody of his coach??
