Johannesburg - With preparation for the People’s Race in full swing, Soweto and South Africa’s athletics community at large is eagerly awaiting race day set for November 1, 2015.
With only 7 000 spots per category, the organisers are encouraging all runners to register ahead of time. Entries for each race category is anticipated to fill up quickly, and no registration will be available on the day.
“All measures have been taken to ensure runners have an enjoyable experience, from start to finish, as partners have placed high priority on the logistical components of the race. Stringent safety and security processes along with a truly inspiring route will take the event experience to new heights and restore the Soweto Marathon to its flagship status,” said Sello Khunou, Chairperson of Soweto Marathon Trust.
This year’s introduction of Old Mutual as title sponsor means the Soweto Marathon and its planning committee have access to the brands wealth of experience in marathons. The Gauteng Provincial Government will also play an important role given their expertise in hosting large scale sporting events, showcasing Gauteng as a world class sporting hub.
The routes selected for the various categories will showcase Soweto in all its beauty and rich heritage, with the start and finish lines based at Expo Centre Johannesburg (Nasrec), for ease of access for participants and supporters.
With the runners’ safety in mind, hydration stations have been placed every 3 kilometres along each route. “Race day will see almost 426 marshals along the route with rapid response vehicles and skilled first aid teams on standby to help athletes along the way,” added Khunou.
“There will also be ample parking for all runners available, supported by a dedicated team to direct participants.”
In addition, entrants for the 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km can look forward to a new Dry Fit shirt thanks to technical sponsor, Nike.
With just over four weeks to go, the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon planning committee is confident that the actions and procedures put into place will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all those attending.
