New record high wave surfed

Cape Town - A Hawaiian professional surfer has likely broken his own world record by riding a wave off the coast of Portugal - thought to be more than 100 feet high.

According to the NY Daily News website, Garrett McNamara, 45, surfed the extraordinary wave on Monday off the coast of Nazare, about 75 miles north of Lisbon.

His feat is thought to have set the new world record for tallest wave surfed. If that proves to be the case, McNamara will have broken his own previous record of 78 feet, which he set at the same location in November 2011.

Following his epic accomplishment, McNamara took to Twitter to thank his fans.

“Thank you for all your support. It means the world to me. Today was an awesome day and so fun to be out there,” McNamara tweeted.

“Oh how I love Nazare. Can’t wait for next year!!!”
