Laureus: Sport for good, sport for peace

2018-01-10 14:28

Cape Town - Sport builds trust and the values taught by teamwork and it creates common goals through shared struggles and victories. Through its own language, understood by all players, sport has the power to unite.

Using this uniting factor, the Peres Centre for Peace in Israel, with the support of the Laureus World Sports Academy, utilises sport, new media and the arts as peace education tools that bring together thousands of youth every year. And despite the ongoing setbacks in the area, the Centre has continued to grow their impact in the Middle East, uniting Arab and Jewish youth through sport as they learn to cheer each other on, help each other win, comfort each other in defeat and build lasting friendships.

Founded in 1996 by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former Israeli President Shimon Peres, the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation looks to promote peaceful Middle East through medicine, business, innovation, culture and art, and with sport playing a central role.

To promote peace education, the Peres Center organises activities centered on soccer in schools and afterschool in various Israeli and Palestinian communities and the “Laureus Sport for Good Middle East”, a sports association that promotes peace and friendship through basketball.

Over 20,000 children and youth to date have participated in the Peres Centre’s peacebuilding through sports programmes, and the Center is recognised worldwide for its commitment and support of the United Nations for Sustainable Development goal - to achieve a more peaceful society through sport.

Since the year 2000, Laureus Sport for Good has raised over 100 million Euros for its various projects.
