Lambie takes Sport24 Award

2011-08-02 12:28

Cape Town - Sharks wunderkid Patrick Lambie continues his love affair with Sport24 readers as the 2010 overall winner of the Sport24 Performance of the Year walked away with June’s Performance of the Month Award for his marvellous versatility over the course of successive weekends, leading the Sharks to the Super Rugby finals series.

The Durban youngster, with 38.58% of the 1 755 votes held off some experienced competition in South African women’s hockey star Pietie Coetzee, who earned 32.88% of the votes, after she powered her way to the world Test record of 220 goals. She ended the Champions Challenge on 225 goals from 227 Tests – only a fraction under a goal a game.

South Africa’s long jump king Khotso Mokoena leaped into third spot with 16.01% of the votes for his gold medal leap of 8.08m at the Oslo Bislett Games, a Diamond League event.

Now, everyone likes a good moan about referees and Pro Legoete is not the first ref to face the wrath of the Sport24 readers in the Plonker of the Month category (28.15% of the votes), and he surely won’t be the last either. This time round, the assistant referee incurred Aussie wrath when he was involved in “miscommunication” with match referee Craig Joubert during the Bulls v Waratahs Super Rugby match at Loftus, which resulted in visiting lock Pat O’Connor being red-carded for an apparent head-butt. O’Connor was later exonerated by SANZAR, after no evidence of such an offence was found.

It was a touch-line call between second and third place but after a television replay, SARU sneaked into second place (26.15%) over the confusion regarding the composition of their preliminary Bok training/planning squads for the World Cup. A hugely expansive 51-strong party was named in April, only for it to be whittled down to 37 in early June ... before swelling up once again to 49 a few days later – all very confusing, even for those players named in that squad. Butch James, who received 26.10% of the votes for one of his infamous high tackles on one of his former team-mates, Sharks’ Keegan Daniel, was edged in to third place.

Voting for June’s Awards: 1 755 votes cast in total

Patrick Lambie - (38.58%)
Pietie Coetzee - (32.88%)
Khotso Mokoena - (16.01%)

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:11

Well said Chilli - jk is a bit ugly though.

      Eduardoo - 2011-08-02 13:13

Does this outburst by Biggest Bull remind anyone else of that youtube video with that man/girl/thing telling everybody to "Leave Britney aloooooone!!"? Just saying...

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:17

Eduardoo, that was the whole idea.

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-08-02 13:25

BTW - any word on the injury to Pierre Spies?

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:28

No Rob, unfortunately not. I am really concerned though..

      Eduardoo - 2011-08-02 13:29

      JohnnyBB - 2011-08-02 15:30

....WP/Stormers = Plonkers for the last 10 years....!! ..............he he he he ..!!! ...and maybe for the next 10 years....

      roboman1 - 2011-08-02 16:47

shows a dearth of sporting knowledge amongst sports24 readers, thats all i can say

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 12:46

I like Lambie...but in the long run I think Sias Ebersohn might just be the better of the 2. (Once his defence improves of course.....)

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 12:47

Ja Saffa. Your infatuation with school boys knows no bounds..

      Gavin - 2011-08-02 13:00

I never EVER thought I would say this but that is the best thing you have ever said BB. :-) hahahahaha. It seems if SAFFA-Cat says it, it becomes gospel. Sias Ebersohn better than Lambie? nooooooo...... Now SC we all know you are WP's biggest supporter but I would like you to name one Sharks player you think is not second best to all the other players you like......

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 13:01

Sias a schoolboy? Don't tell him that.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 13:29

@Gavin - I just prefer Sias.....sorry. My fave Sharks players are already the best in their positions - countrywide, and play for the Boks - Bismarck, JPP and Beast. We're entitled to our opinions I reckon?

      jk - 2011-08-02 13:49

saffa- the problem with the ebersohn brothers is that they playng in the fs...

      GHT - 2011-08-02 15:03

Saffa. I have a feeling that Sias might become a superstar in the future, but not sure he will be better than Lambie. He sure took his chances this year with the cheetahs and I really can't think of many games where he lost the plot.

      StaalBurgher - 2011-08-02 16:36

There is nothing wrong for SAFFA to mention Sias. He has looked promising and has been quite consistent. Compared to the yoyo performances that Jantjies gave you really have to wonder why Sias did not go on tour. Although that said there is no problem in Sias waiting till next year, let us see if he can duplicate his performance. Unfortunately he is likely to always play second fiddle to Jantjies (if he gains consistency) even if he ends up being better. SARU already has a problem with Lambie contesting for flyhalf and will make it difficult for them to get the "correct" colour in there. Can't the damn kid just be happy with fullback, I ask you!

  • Chillipop - 2011-08-02 13:01

Patrick Lambie you beauty!!!! Well done!

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:13

oops, more man-on-man action here. Stuff this I'm gone.

      jk - 2011-08-02 13:50

whats up chilli- i cant wait for the days episode today- stefano send all of them a message on tape...

  • sfgemeni - 2011-08-02 13:12

@Concerned................... I am a Afrikaner that loves my Rugby, But your post to Biggest Bull was k*k funny. I have tears still running from reading that.

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:19

Where are your tears running to?

      Concerned - 2011-08-02 13:27

What biggest bul doesn't know is that I'm also an Afrikaner, just not the type he wants and expects me to be

      Biggest Bull - 2011-08-02 13:35

Concerned, you are not a special breed of Afrikaner. You are half-Dutch just like the rest of us.

      Concerned - 2011-08-02 13:39

Please explain to me where I said I was a special breed of Afrikaner? All I suggested was that I am not the brandy swilling, hilux driving, beer boep brandishing type that you normally see wearing a blue bulls jersey

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 13:44

@Doc - whos is that person in Biggestbulls pic? This morning it was a pic of the "old" Brad Pitt in that backwards in time movie. But I have no clue who this is?

      Concerned - 2011-08-02 13:47

      @Saffa Cat - it's a picture of his boyfriend

      docraven - 2011-08-02 13:50

its him.Looks like he could sing for Die Antwoord

      jk - 2011-08-02 13:50

i think it was a crap typical bulls vettie joke...

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 14:06

@Biggestbull - tell us who is in your pic - pwetty please, with a brandy choccie on top?

      jk - 2011-08-02 14:20

      JohnnyBB - 2011-08-02 15:38

...WP / Stormers = Plonkers for the last 10 years...!! .........ha ha ha ha ha ...!!!

      jk - 2011-08-02 15:46

      ChumScrubber - 2011-08-02 16:08

Concerned - be careful, be very careful! A lot of us drink brandy and drive Hilux's, don't stereotype - I'm a salt peel and Sharks fan by the way.

      Concerned - 2011-08-02 17:11

@ChumScrubber: precisely what I was getting at. SA rugby too dominated by the brannas and coke/hilux brigade. That's what i was saying and Biggest Bull accused me of having a go at Afrikaners. if news24 hadn't deleted all the comments you'd see what i mean...although you might not like the assertion

  • Concerned - 2011-08-02 13:28

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-08-02 13:37

      Are you Concerned?

      Concerned - 2011-08-02 13:41

As far as you're concerned, yes

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-08-02 13:49

      ChumScrubber - 2011-08-02 16:09

      Second that.

  • Carl Muller - 2011-08-02 14:23
