Miami Dolphins owner says NFL will 'definitely' have 2020 season

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said on Tuesday the NFL will definitely stage a 2020 season and currently plans to have fans in the stands for games despite the coronavirus pandemic.

"I think definitely there will be a football season this year," the billionaire real estate developer said on CNBC.

"The real question is will there be fans in the stadium?

"Right now, today, we're planning to have fans in the stadium. But I think the NFL is looking at, and is very flexible, so that we will be able to start on time and bring that entertainment that is so needed for all of us in this country."

The league released a full 2020 season schedule earlier this month that begins September 10 with reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City hosting Houston.

"I think the one thing we all miss is our sports," Ross said. "I don't think a lot of people realize it until they no longer have it.

"Certainly the NFL, I think, will be ready to go. I know we're all looking forward to it. I know I am."

The Dolphins revealed a plan earlier this month on how they might deal with playing games before a limited number of spectators and still meet social distancing guidelines, including timed entrances and exits per sections, reducing capacity to 15 000 spectators, face masks for all spectators and food being ordered from and delivered to seats.

"We've done a lot of things down in Miami here," Ross said. "We're prepared, either way, and hopefully there will be fans in the stadium."
