Mayweather v McGregor social media twar

Cape Town - We are now mere days away from the year's biggest fight between boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather and brash UFC champion Conor McGregor.

The pair will face off on Saturday, August 26 in Las Vegas with the winner taking home the coveted 'Money Belt'.

Mayweather and McGregor will meet in a 12-round contest - under boxing rules - that is tipped to become the richest fight in history.

When it comes to the bookies, Mayweather is the favourite, however the odds in the American's favour have shortened leading up to the final showdown.

Despite being a massive underdog, McGregor insists that he is ready to stun the oddsmakers and even went as far to state that he will pulverise the undefeated champion in two rounds.

It's also becoming clearer how much each fighter is likely to pocket with estimates varying. Some projections indicate that Mayweather - win or lose - could make over R2 billion with McGregor collecting more than a R1 billion.

Social media is often tapped as an indicator of a star's power.

But who wins the Mayweather v McGregor social media war?

On Facebook, Mayweather takes the title by a landslide for the most likes on his page with 13.2 million to McGregor's 6.5 million.

Mayweather again reigns supreme on Twitter with over 7.41 million followers to the 5.57 million of McGregor.

However, McGregor has the upper hand on the American when it comes to Instagram followers which sees the Irishman boast 17.2 million followers to Mayweather's 16.5 million.

The fight will be broadcast live on SuperSport 2 from 05:30 (SA time) on Sunday, August 27.
