Kingston remains king after Stomping Grounds

Cape Town - Kofi Kingston continued his rule over the WWE Championship, getting past his arch-nemesis Dolf Ziggler at Stomping Grounds at the Tacoma Dome, Washington DC, on Sunday.

In a gruesome Steel Cage battle that slowly warmed up to expectations, the Ghanaian-American Kingston retained his crown after managing to escape first from the steel fences barricading the ring.

The one big result from the nine event title contests, was Ricochet defeating Samoa Joe to win the United States Championship.

Drew Gulak defeated champion Tony Nese and Akira Tozawa for the Triple Threat Cruiserweight Championship while Roman Reigns proved supreme against Drew McIntyre in a no-title singles match.

Kevin Owen and Sami Zayn defeated the New Day pair of Big E and Xavier Woods in their tag team contest.

However, the big talking point from the event was Seth Rollins (aided by surprise referee Lacey Evans) retaining his Universal Championship against Baron Corbin in what was later changed to a no count out and no disqualification tie by the guest official.

Evans was also licking her wounds after losing her Raw Women’s Championship challenge to Becky Lynch, who is Rollins’ real-life girlfriend, in the earlier main event fight.

Despite her referee appearance also being curtailed by John Cone - who is also not in Corbin’s corner - this was a battle and victory that Rollins looked to guarantee for himself.

In one of the fan favourite encounters, Bayley defeated Alexa Bliss for the Smackdown Women’s Championship with the duo of Daniel Bryan and Rowan pinning Heavy Machinery (Otis and Tucker) to retain the Smackdown Tag team championship.
