SA swimmers add four more medals in Doha

Doha - The South African swimming team concluded the Doha leg of the Fina/airweave Swimming World Cup with an additional two gold, one silver and one bronze medal tonight.

With only one leg to go, Cameron van der Burgh showed why he is the current overall rankings leader, as he grabbed the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke race, clocking a quick 59.68. The silver medal went to Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta in 1:00.60 and the bronze to Great Britain’s Ross Murdoch in 1:00.84.

Chad le Clos scooped his fourth gold medal of the competition, this time in the 100m butterfly, finishing with a time of 51.44 ahead of the USA’s Tom Shields in 52.10 and Australia’s Christopher Wright in 52.50.

Le Clos also managed a 4th place finish in the 200m backstroke with a time of 1:59.38, while SA’s Martin Binedell was 5th in 2:01.47.

Michael Meyer won silver in the 200m individual medley in 2:01.63 with the gold medal going to Japan’s Keita Sunama in 2:00.48 and the bronze to Hungary’s David Verraszto in 2:01.90.

It was bronze for Mzansi’s Douglas Erasmus in the fast pace 50m freestyle, touching the wall in 22.50 behind Brazil’s Bruno Fratus in 22.28 and USA’s Anthony Ervin in 22.47.

In other results, Kaylene Corbett came 8th in the 50m breaststroke final in 32.59, while Calvyn Justus also finished 8th in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:51.29.

The team will now be heading to Dubai for the final leg of the Fina/airweave Swimming World Cup, which will take place on 6th and 7th November at the Hamdan Sports Complex.
