Hungary to host FINA champs

Budapest - Hungary will host the 2017 world swimming championships, the sports governing body, FINA, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have announced in Budapest on Wednesday.

The event will be staged in Budapest after Cornel Marculescu, FINA executive director, signed an agreement with Orban in the Hungarian capital.

Mexico announced in February it was pulling out of hosting the event, originally scheduled for Guadalajara, as part of a massive drive to cut public spending.

The 2015 championships, which are held every two years, are to be staged in Kazan, Russia, while the 2013 edition was in Barcelona, Spain.

Budapest will also host the 2021 championships.
