Francois Botha fumes in defeat

2013-02-08 14:32

Cape Town - Francois "White Buffalo" Botha was left fuming after he lost to Sonny Bill Williams on points in their WBA International heavyweight bout in Brisbane, Australia, on Friday.

Cut short from the original 12 rounds to 10, Williams looked in control for most of the fight.

The South African, however, was furious with officials after the decision was made to shorten the bout, with the 44-year-old looking to have worn out Williams by the end of the 10th.

"You know I love Sonny Bill, I think he's a great guy, a gentleman, but this was bullshit," the 115kg Botha said in an interview after the fight.

"If you look at the crowd, you know who won. You've got to win fair and square, not with the advantage of the judges, you've got to fight. According to me I won, hands-free."

Botha's trainer, Hardy Mileham, was shocked to see the bout shortened - a decision that was seemingly made during the contest.

"The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, and in round number 10 he (Williams) was in danger," Mileham said.

Despite a strong comeback by Botha in the final stages, with Williams visibly shaken, it was ultimately not enough to sway the judges.

Botha, who did not sit down once between rounds, came out firing in the final round, nearly bringing Williams to his knees with a flurry punches.

Over the first four rounds Williams, 27, had dominated proceedings, while Botha clearly adopted a strategy of outlasting his younger opponent.

The veteran South African taunted Williams throughout the early rounds.

With a number of powerful left-hand jabs, Williams caused Botha's right eye to close up.

Botha said he wanted a rematch against the New Zealand heavyweight champion and All Blacks star.

"A rematch - if he can beat me he can go on, but if he doesn't he should throw in the towel."

  • wayne.j.mcnaughton - 2013-02-08 14:38

why was it shortened and how are they allowed to do that? - 2013-02-08 14:48

still havnt heard any valid reason...

      settie.zuweni - 2013-02-08 15:12

      That was clear robbery!

      johannes.m.villiers - 2013-02-08 15:25

This was a waste of time. Why even bother to schedule a boxing match if it was rigged before hand? Why reduce the rounds as soon as SBW is flat on his feet? Bullsh#t! Once again the bookies smile after paying off a couple of officials. It seems like it is not only doping that is currently big in Australia but match fixing as well!! Australian sport and their officials are a disgrace. How can the judges decide to shorten the match??? It is like deciding in the 50th minute of a rugby game that the game will stop after 60 minutes. Daylight cheating and match fixing. The judges should be investigated as something illegally clearly took place.

      classwar.trotsky - 2013-02-08 15:36

If the pugilists were expecting and trained for a 12 round bout, then shortening it on the day should result in a no-contest. This needs to be re-fought, and if it is for ten rounds, then they can adapt their strategy and training accordingly. In any case, in this bout, nothing more than a spectacle exhibition in any case, the real loser was the sport of boxing.

      mario.roodt - 2013-02-08 15:40

The ref also saved Sonny "Boy" Williams when he momentarily stopped the fight to deduct 1 point from him for holding on. That gave SBW time to recover before the final seconds. It was rigged... Plain and simple!

      Brendan - 2013-02-08 15:42

      Bryce lawrence was the ref

      theO rAcLe - 2013-02-08 15:57

Nothing about these aussie sheep sh_ggers is fair.. they will fix games, cheat in games,,Dope in games..WTF

      iNJBL - 2013-02-08 16:03

Maybe them Aussies used duckworth-Lewis to cut the rounds coz it was raining lefts and rights on sbw

      bullet.proof.9400 - 2013-02-08 16:35

Are you sure the ref is not related to Bryce Lawrence. Of course he would lose in Aus what else did you expect? The land of cheats and that small turd that floats to the east of Aus proves that sh.t can float on its own

      franklyn.davies.1 - 2013-02-08 16:55

boxing has always been rotten to the core, these organisations run a money making rigged results bandwagon to line their own pockets with cash....moneybills.

      rocco.dewet.3 - 2013-02-08 17:15

I was actually hoping SBW would lose, because I have the highest admiration for his athletic skills which could be better applied in other sports like Rugby Union or Rugby League, where he already is a superstar. I do like to occasionally watching boxing at the higher level, but I pity the boxers: inevitable degree of facial and more importantly, brain damage. So SBW, well done, quite while you are ahead. You edged the Grey Buffalo, but did not exactly set the boxing world alight.Your superior athletic abilities will not save you from devastating defeats at the highest level. The likes of the Klitschkos will demolish you. In my humble opinion, concentrate on Rugby, making money and shagging beautiful girls. Life is short.

      jason.vanderspuy.5 - 2013-02-08 21:12

Apparently some bookies are refunding punters, regarding it as a "no contest" What a monumental f#ck up by the Aussies! From the ring announcer calling him "Sonny Boy" to the refs bizarre decision to shorten the fight. A total disgrace Agree Sonny Bill should retire. He must know now he's got no chance against the genuine heavyweight contenders

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-08 22:19

You lost Botha, face it. I see you have the typical Saffa mentality of blaming someone else when you lose. You were talking pre-fight about how you were going to knock SBW out early, yet you didnt do it. Again, just like most Saffas.. all talk and no culpability. SBW won the fight, there are no buts. - 2013-02-08 23:10

how does this change from 12 to 10. I am a little confused.

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2013-02-09 03:33

It was a real strange decision, shortening a fight especially when the decision was made during the fight. Aus sport is ethically on a low. However irrespective, Botha should have finished the fight earlier. I know Botha was going for a distance fight, and trying to tire SBW and then get him in the later rounds, but still SBW got the better of him in the earlier rounds and still ahead on points by start of round 10. I think SBW is a better boxer than people give him credit for, but still with all Botha’s experience he should have put SBW away and not let it get to 10 rounds with him actually trailing on points at that late stage. If a rematch will happen in CT I think Botha will win, but what will that proof; a former world champion contender narrowly beating a cross sport convert and novice fighter. It is time for Botha to retire.

      jason.vanderspuy.5 - 2013-02-09 04:10

Pierre, I watched the whole fight and I don't think Botha could have done anything more in the earlier rounds. SBW's speed and reach made it too difficult for him to land more punches. Botha is considerably slower than in his younger days. But he's still tough as hell, and he's boxing smart and ringfit. SBW clearly don't have the experience and skill (at the moment) to go 12 rounds with a real heavyweight. I'll be very surprised if he wants to put himself through that again. He should concentrate on rugby now - where his real talent lies. I suspect he will

      Anton - 2013-02-09 06:50

      So Australian!!

      neels.gunter - 2013-02-09 06:56

No valid reason. FB would have cut SBW up in the next two rounds. SBW only had the upper hand in the cuddling and smoochind department which was blatantly allowed by the ref.

      philip.harris.967 - 2013-02-09 11:12

All seems to be a mystery . Bothas manager says he agreed to ten rounds!!!.....if so why didn't Botha know ? Unfortunately Queensland doesn't have the type of boxing controls that other states have ......maybe that is why it was held there. Love to see Botha get a rematch .

      sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2013-02-09 18:08

To save baas' ass because he only won round ten on that fight and the whole De la Rey family goes whaa whaa whaa like crazy dogs!

      johan.fou - 2013-02-09 20:00

Oh, what a legend Frans is. :) This was a true Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6) moment for me. SBW is MUCH younger, A LOT fitter and in his prime. Frans held him for 10 rounds, and clearly would have had this match had it not been for the early stop. Don't worry Frans, you're still the champion. The BS with the Schultz fight didn't get you down then, and neither will this. They robbed you of the title and your victory then, and you kept on being a legend...they're doing it again now, but the White Buffalo will prevail. You'll always be a hero to a lot of us, no matter how they cheat you. Corrie beat you, and you came back again...3 times! You gave Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis and Moorer a run for their money, and kept on going. Upon your comeback, you m@ered Mirovic to the extend that he didn't know where he was. They have cheated you out of victory, denied you matches and even tried stopping your career. You kept on going, and prevailed. Don't let this little speed-bump get you down! Hats off to you my friend. Jy is 'n Yster!

      stephanie.sutherland41 - 2013-02-10 04:12

@the Oracle - please get it right for f-sakes. The Sheep are New Zealand you dumb twit. Kangaroos are Australia. And SBW is a New Zealander not an Ozzie you twat.... Its like dumb and dumber in these comments at times. Now to the case of the fight, yes what they did goes against the rules and yes Botha should sue them and demand a rematch in South Africa for a complete 12 round fight or even 15, lets see if SBW is a poser or a contender :) the former i bet lmao

      jco.vanrooyen - 2013-02-10 11:07

      Reason: Bryce was a judge!

      sonny.bill.35 - 2013-02-10 11:31

News just in from Herald Sun: Francois Botha tests positive to a banned substance following the Sonny Bill Williams fight. Results of a urine sample submitted in Brisbane last Tuesday under WBA regulations show he had Phentermine - a banned stimulant - in his system. The? drugs test, which has now been forwarded to the WBA's global headquarters in Panama, also? detected Benzodiazepine. Botha you are a drug taking cheat and a disgrace to sport. You should be banned for life from Boxing.

  • cornel.oosthuizen.5 - 2013-02-08 14:39

I really enjoyed the fight. Sonny Bill showed some amazing growth from the first couple of fights but had the fight gone for 12 rounds like it was intended I do think he would have been KO'ed. Yes there were cheap shots etc. I enjoyed it, and if there was a rematch I would watch it as well.

      klippies.coke.7 - 2013-02-08 16:48

Spot on. SB lasted 10 rounds, and for that you have to give him credit. One more minute, or one more round he would have been down. F'n cheaters!

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-08 22:21

How do you know that, SBBW is huge, you see the physique on the guy, maybe he wouldve caught botha with a clean shot sending him down, you simply do not know. So saying that1 more round from Botha and SBW was finished is just like saying the contrary, the point is you just dont know so speculation is pointless.

      nicholas.graan - 2013-02-08 23:15

Size and physique doesn't guarantee you anything in boxing. Sonny Boy was in serious trouble in the 10th.

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-09 05:43

@ Nick, agreed SBW was in serious trouble in the 10th, but this doesnt mean he was going to get knocked out, how can anyone predict that?

      sheda.habib - 2013-02-09 16:36

@gayleb.drumm you obviously know nothing about boxing. your man was beaten from round 9. he was finished in 10 and needed the refs intervention to save his ass in that round. it was scheduled for 12 but 11 would have seen Sonny knocked out even with the ref trying to help Sonny. Anyone with more than half a brain could predict that. It is a disgrace - but hey you wanna know what is worse. The saffa's have beaten the All Blacks in every Major rugby world cup tournament that counts. AND the saffas have managed to win a world rugby cup tiltle AWAY from home and home ref advantage. Keep your boxing semi-title and we will keep the rugby titles.

      sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2013-02-09 18:05

      What does these fools know?

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-09 23:09

Oh Sheda, you are a sad deluded little man, you say Botha had him from round 9, well SBW had him from rounds 1-8, youre probably not good at maths but you work out th points decision. No... Just South Africans cant recognise the last WC because they are too bitter about not even making the semis with a 'past use by' team. Youre obviously not very clued on about sport so i pretty much disregard youre comment anyway, but AB's havent played SA in every WC. Stop just copying other peoples opinions, i know its hard for you but form your own opinion.

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-09 23:27

Oh yeah and Sheda, All Blacks are the World Cup champions this much is fact

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2013-02-09 23:32

Sheda, in true South African fashion, if the Springboks lose in the next WC, you will just say that one doesnt count either... They only count if SA wins right?!! Hahahaha your hilarious

@Steve.haag1 - Watch the match preview. The match was scheduled for 12x3min rounds. It was changed during the fight. That is the reason why everybody is mad. Not even Botha's trainer was aware of this!!!

      johannes.m.villiers - 2013-02-08 15:32

@ steve.haag1 - Stop posting nonsense and rather compare apples with apples. How can you compare a scheduled 10 rounds fight that lasted for 10 rounds with a scheduled 12 rounds that lasted for 10 rounds??? It is like comparing 20 overs cricket with 50 overs cricket. Not the same thing!!!

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:17

At no point did the match ref confer with the ring announcer, but lifted the hand of Williams directly after the judges' points had been announced and before the announcer had read the name of the winner. He knew before hand who the winner should be.

      brian.coetzee - 2013-02-08 23:30

@steve all WBA title fights are scheduled 12 rounds hence this fight was scheduled 12 rounds as it was for the WBA vacant title. Theses guys have brought the sport of boxing into disrepute, this fight should be declared nul en void and a rematch should be ordered by the WBA.

      How's your guide dog doing?

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:21

Clearly you did not watch the same fight as Williams could scarcely stay on his feet at the end of round 9 and even worse in round 10. Do you think he held on so often because he liked the music and wanted to dance?

  • Jean2301 - 2013-02-08 14:41

Booked for 12 fight for 12, SonnyBill, do they shorten rugby games when the All Blacks are ahead.

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:23

Seems they have to revert to dirty tactics to win anything. Shame, the little outpost in the Pacific needs some TLC and moral boosting at all costs, seems like.

      phillys.winterbottom - 2013-02-09 12:18

are you aware that SBW camp have done this shortening of the rounds tactic before? If you go to the aussie and kiwi newspaper websites, the bookies are up in arms about it!!!!!

  • michael.kleber.376 - 2013-02-08 14:42

  • sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2013-02-08 14:43

  • gert.swart.393 - 2013-02-08 14:45

All credit to SBW. He has improved drastically and he had the perfect game plan to keep Botha away. Untill Botha got him out of his game plan in the 9th. However, Francois almost killed him in the 10th. The 11th would have been very bad for SBW. That is probably why they did not continue with the scheduled last 2 rounds. (What a joke!) I don't think SBW will continue boxing after this. He got hurt to bad.

      michael.kleber.376 - 2013-02-08 14:53

You sum up the fight well and in the post match interviews SBW wasnt too confident about continuing his hugging career

  • rob.vanjou - 2013-02-08 14:48

It was a strange decision to shorten the fight. SBW was taking strain in the last few and agree that there is a very good chance Botha would have floored him if it had gone the full distance. Which may be the reason it was shortened - the organisors(SBW backers) wouldn't want to spoil their cash cow now would they. Rematch needed!

  • wayne.j.mcnaughton - 2013-02-08 14:50

ON what grounds are they allowed to shorten the fight???

      rob.vanjou - 2013-02-08 16:06

When their fighter is going to lose

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:28

Their man was struggling a bit. They saw that he was unable to lift the sledgehammer in plan B and had to revert to plan C by shortening the fight. Plan D was to deny that the fight ever took place and that we were all affected by a mass delusion.

  • michael.kleber.376 - 2013-02-08 14:50

  • gage.demort - 2013-02-08 14:52

What a joke - match fixing at its least subtle - your man's in trouble so you wink nudge the officials who have been pre-purchased and they stop the fight early for no reason. 12 rounds is not 10 rounds (surprise!). SBW KO'd on his feet, if he's honest with himself he will stand by the tweet he made after Mundine's fight: boxing is indeed corrupt (at least in australia). And will retire from boxing as he said he would if KO'd. Botha is old and slow but at least he could beat a novice... by the skin of his teeth.

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:32

Go view the footage again. You will see that in round 7, 8 and 9 that Williams pulled a head butt at the end of every second or third clinch. The instruction of the ref at the beginning is to defend yourself at all times, which is what Botha then did.

      Threetimeschampions - 2013-02-08 22:23

Ignoreer hierdie wilco aap, hy soek net aandag

WBA have it on the site as 10 rounds

      Phillip Carlisle - 2013-02-08 15:06

I can't find that on the WBA site? Where did you see that?

  • stirrer.stirrer - 2013-02-08 14:55

Rigged!!! How can you shorten a bout while it's going on? I smell a rat... Typical Aussie "fairplay".

      Fishlus - 2013-02-08 16:49

      Not fairplay, just Lance-a-lot

  • marnusmnorval - 2013-02-08 14:58

"You've got to win fair and square" hahah like you fought fair you douche

  • alfred.killian - 2013-02-08 15:13

Boha (100ste), Williams(200ste) op ranglys. baklei vir vakante titel, ja natuurlik is dit ernstig

  • sam.swanpoel - 2013-02-08 15:14

Frans was robbed he was getting the better of sony biil without question.

      greg.shartin - 2013-02-09 00:12

SBWwas going down!!! I have the highest regard for him as a rugby player but he is a rookie in the boxing ring who should hang up his heavy gloves right now. He would get ko'd within 2 rounds by any real heavyweight boxer worth his salt. One more round in this fight would have sent SBW into Lalla-land. It was an absolute disgrace that the fight was cut short because the guy was clearly gonna be hitting the canvass soon.

  • clint.skinner - 2013-02-08 15:15

Should never have been shortened, least of all in the middle of the bout! Fair warning to all. SBW that was cheating and you know it. Lets all shorten sporting events if the opposition starts catching up and is likely to win at the end...

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 15:37

Are you for real? And hitting someone after the bell has gone is honest sporting conduct? Wakeup hypocrite.

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:37

Niel, look again, he was reacting to head butts that the stupid or biased ref did not acknowledge after Botha tried to bring it under his attention. Look at the clinches in rounds 7, 8 and 9.

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 16:39

Tyronne, I don't watch boxing but you can't go running around calling some1 a cheat if your guy is the one who cheated. Sbw couldve knocked buffel out a few times, but lack of experience cost him.

  • PetriVoges - 2013-02-08 15:29

He had 10 rounds to beat someone who doesn't belong in the ring with him. Time to hang up the gloves!

      rontheogre - 2013-02-08 16:39

Game plan was to box over 12 rounds. His trainer could be heard between rounds 6 and seven that he now wants Botha to win every round as per plan as Williams was "going", I assume he meant the legs.

  • hein.cloete - 2013-02-08 15:34

a rematch - 12 ROUNDS.....and keep it at 12 ROUNDS....bliksems, dont change it whe your guy starts yes of course he has good is like sseing a rugby team coming back with 20 mins reamining...and then ' uhm we will cut cut 10 mins from the match'......will the other team be happy?of course not!! dis bull!!!!!

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 15:36

Maybe they added up all the minutes buffel kept fighting when the fight was stopped and saw that added up2 two xtra rounds?

  • blousteblou.meyer - 2013-02-08 15:36

ditto, as in the case of the AFCON ref from Tunisa

  • blousteblou.meyer - 2013-02-08 15:37

ditto, as in the case of the AFCON ref from Tunisa, and the rugby world cup with Bryce Lawrence.

  • ben.uy1 - 2013-02-08 15:40

I'm a Kiwi and this is just a travesty. Sonny Bill Williams is a poor boxer who's had the easy way to the top.

  • Snolfie - 2013-02-08 15:40

I honestly think SBW was to p***y to lose so they shortened the fight. He should be a man and fight by the rules until its over!! SBW did not deserve to win.

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 15:50

Seriously? Are u stupid? So in ur opinion hitting after the bell, hitting when the ref has stopped the fight etc is fighting by the rules? Sbw did deserve to win, botha is a cheat.

  • kellee.peek - 2013-02-08 15:42

Extremely disappointed in the fight. Botha was holding out and had it won over SBW. IT'S EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING FOR FANS WHO PAID TO SEE A 12 ROUND FIGHT. It was not called for and how do they possibly end a 12 round fight at 10 rounds? It's like playing 70 minutes in an Nrl game and calling it quits! It doesn't happen.

  • amit.chiba - 2013-02-08 15:48

And so SBW proudly wears a belt which that he doesnt deserve! Well done to the Austrailian ref's and match officials. You yet again showed us that match mixing is indeed rife in your country!

  • daanbarnard - 2013-02-08 15:48

Same old same old! First with the world cup and now boxing. Aussie can’t be trusted. Fransie inflected more damage, had his knees wobble like a love struck teenage girl. One more round and SBW would've been “lippe op die klippe”

  • coenraad.groenewald.311 - 2013-02-08 15:50

Botha was not cheated, the match was fixed from the start! It was a win/win situation for both boxers. Sonny is unbeaten and will continue boxing and Botha had a good holiday in Aus and will come home with some extra cash!! Not good for boxing's reputation though!

  • Christopher Naidoo - 2013-02-08 15:52

Im sure your son can beat you too!

  • iNJBL - 2013-02-08 15:59

"According to me I won, hands free." Exactly dude you never used your hands enough and lost!

  • glenn.swart - 2013-02-08 16:01

Of course he does, this is a non-issue, the fight result will be annulled due to No-Contest. The real issue is Who is behind it?? It must be exposed, Aussie sport match fixing is in the news right now...

  • ch.taylor.7 - 2013-02-08 16:02

If he was the better man, then he would have won.

  • thatmanvan - 2013-02-08 16:03

Not surprising - the Ozzies seem to hard on with match fixing and doping at the moment.... It's got dodge written all over it!

  • johnvkaraoke - 2013-02-08 16:06

what amazes me is what gives them the right to shorten a fight, they knew sbw would be knocked out if the fight continued it's 12 rounds

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 16:31

Yes they did because botha cheated and took a cheap shot that basically knocked sbw out after the bell had rung. Continueing to 12 rounds would have been unfair towards sbw. He boxed better than vuilgat cheat buffel and deserved the win. If sbw took cheap shots like that u all would be calling him a cheat, now that the shoe is on the other foot u can't accept it. Hypocrites.

  • zander.powell - 2013-02-08 16:11

Is anyone selling White Buffalo t-shirts? Definitely want.

  • grant.butler.104 - 2013-02-08 16:11

What an absolute circus.....boxing should hang its head in shame.

  • pieter.rensburg - 2013-02-08 16:14

    Bryce Lawrence was the ref!!!

  • siobhan.dyer.9 - 2013-02-08 16:16

SBW fought well in the early rounds however did NOT deserve to win! Shocking and unfair result. Botha was cheated out of victory! He would've KO'd SBW had the match continued as it should have! Useless ref! Even the crown was up in arms and that's quite a statement considering the amount of booing Botha received upon first entering the ring. There should be a rematch!

      deon.spruyt - 2013-02-08 20:53

Agreed - however, I believe if SBW is a true sportsman, he should get on the plane, come over here and personally hand that belt to Botha. Do it now, the world is laughing at you.

  • fbonthuys - 2013-02-08 16:16

"Does Francois Botha have a legitimate reason to be furious after his defeat to Sonny Bill Williams? " ANSWER: Most certainly, YES!

  • arthur.salvado - 2013-02-08 16:26

Frankie was robbed. Yes, he did get very frustrated and behavior a little lacking BUT he did win. Well done Fransie

      gavin.lott.9 - 2013-02-08 21:25

      No he actually lost..umm?

  • johan.vandervyver.31 - 2013-02-08 16:29

The referee shortened the bout to prevent Williams to be knocked out. He was out on his feet ! It is clear that the outcome was decided before the bout!

      niel.walt - 2013-02-08 16:34

Why was sbw out on his feet? BECAUSE buffel cheated and took a cheap shot after the bell! Julle mense sien ook net dit wat julle wil sien.

      sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2013-02-09 17:55

Johan admit it because judges say Williams won and Baas got kicked on his moer, end of story!! - 2013-02-09 18:53

Did you even watch the fight? He did not get kicked on his moer he was moering the other man, the one with black hair. That Buffalo get's very mad when he sees black.

      tom.hunter.7792 - 2013-02-10 09:49

@niel.walt - have a look at the fight again. SBW was grappling with Frans THATS why he gave him cheap shots, both moves are illegal and they both lose points for it. Frans did seem dirty, but he's an old dog taunting the young pup, par for the course in any sport. Fact remains that the boxing federation are trying to "save face" for SBW and its just backfired. The same happened in the RWC.

  • frost.frost.980 - 2013-02-08 16:31

lol can this White Buffalo just retire ALREADY!!!!! - 2013-02-09 18:55

Naa no one in SA to bring some jush to the boxing ring, the last hopeful Flo got moerd and Danie Botha or whatever is as big a tub of butter as FB so let him fight some more, maybe till his 50 or

  • heironj - 2013-02-08 16:37

He does. SBW far from being a heavyweight boxer...Buffalo was in charge latter round and was about to knock him out
