Cape Town - South African star Chad le Clos has failed to qualify for the final of the men's 100m butterfly at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.
Swimming in the first semi-final on Friday, Le Clos finished in a disappointing seventh place in a time of 51.48 in a race that was won by 2016 Rio Olympic champion, Singapore's Joseph Schooling in 50.78.
The second semi-final was won in a blistering time of 50.07 by rising American star Caeleb Dressel.
Le Clos' time would wind up as the 12th fastest overall, not enough to qualify for Saturday's final.
Le Clos will have to be content with the gold medal in the 200m butterfly having scratched from the 200m freestyle earlier in the championships.
As a result, Team South Africa will finish their campaign with Le Clos' gold and a bronze medal from Cameron van der Burgh in the 50m breaststroke.
