Wellens claims opening stage win at Tour of Andalusia

Madrid - Belgium's Tim Wellens won the first stage of the Tour of Andalusia on Wednesday.

Wellens of Lotto Soudal prevailed on a steep final climb to nip in ahead of Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), who was second, and Spaniard Ion Izagirre (Astana) in third.

At the end of the 170.5km run between Sanlucar de Barrameda and Alcala, Wellens had posted a time of 4:24.12.

The second stage will take place on Thursday, a 216km route between Seville and Torredonjimeno.
