Lance: I'm still a TDF winner

2012-08-29 21:19

Montreal - A defiant Lance Armstrong on Wednesday rebutted the US Anti-Doping Agency's claims that he is a drug cheat, telling throngs of supporters at a Montreal cancer conference: "I won the Tour de France seven times."

The US cycling icon and cancer survivor is set to be stripped of his seven Tour de France titles after he waived the right to fight serious doping claims by the US agency at an independent hearing.

Armstrong briefly addressed the allegations at the World Cancer Congress in Montreal, saying to applause: "My name is Lance Armstrong, I'm a cancer survivor... and yes, I won the Tour de France seven times.

"And for those who don't know what I'm talking about, I love you," he added cheerily.

Armstrong's Livestrong campaign has collected nearly $500m for cancer research and helping people cope with the disease.

He told conference delegates that there is still "too much to be done" in the fight against cancer that "we can't be distracted," alluding to the doping scandal. "I wont be distracted."

Later Armstrong was to go for a 7.5km run in the city, and invited Montrealers to join him.

"Armstrong's Livestrong campaign has collected nearly $500m for cancer research" - Well done to him!! - What have YOU done?

      Squeegee - 2012-08-30 07:06

lasherza, it was built on a lie. I am glad that cancer research has received money - from well wishing and generous people. However, Lance's fame was steroid propelled. All along he lied to those who supported him. He was a great athlete, but felt the need to cheat to succeed. If Bob Mugabe starts a charity and makes huge donations would that excuse his past?

      andre.schutte.319 - 2012-08-30 07:35

Squeegee I see you are not all that informed. Lance was the athlete most tested during his time in the TDF. He was never tested positive. USADA is going on what ex team members, found guilty of doping themselfs, is telling them. There is nothing else for them to go on but on the word guys who want to cut a deal for themselfs so they don't get banned for life. If Lance was guilty for doping he would have tested positive during his time in the TDF. End of story.

      wesleywt - 2012-08-30 07:37

      Yes, USADA ego.

      wesleywt - 2012-08-30 07:38

Um all cyclist dope squeegee. Jan Ulricht came second in those races. He was apparently doping as well. Beside, there is no evidence that doping increases performance anyway.

      shanleigh.sewsanker - 2012-08-30 08:02

If this man was caught for illegal subatances BEFORE he had cancer, would he still be "HERO"? would you have given your 2cents about a man that used illegal drugs, got caught using them and gotten stripped of his TDF titles and then has and eventually beats cancer? or would you say "thats what you get for trying to lie"

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:31

Lance has undergone 500 tests to prove his innocence and not ONE has come back positive. There is NO evidence of his cheating. But I expect News24 commenters to be as stupid about this as most things.

  • shaun.campbell.9275 - 2012-08-29 21:57

This man has PURPOSE and I applaud him for not trying to save his own name but instead trying to save the lives of others! He's a blessing

      andrew.hendrikse - 2012-08-29 22:24

      he is a cheat with

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:31

Andrew, are you always this stupid?

Not sure what to belief - sportmen and women have rationalize their actions to the point where they truly belief their own lies and in the process they have taken many with them. Take Cameron van den Burg for example - he admitted he did not comply with the rules but since that cannot be enforced using the TV proof that exist he and probably 90% of our country thinks he is the rightful winner and worthy of the titles that came with his cheated-winning. It is a matter of "if I can get away with it" then it is right and if I get caught then we need to rationalize and justify it - same with the springbok emblem - no pride from our beloved players to simply go on strike the day before demanding it on its right full place - too afraid they loose their place or loose a couple of rand. Love sport way to much to ever walk away for it - just wishing plain o' honor has it rightful place...

      jaded.oldfart - 2012-08-29 22:46

hey couch potato - who came second in last year's comrades? who came third in this year's olympic marathon? who came fourth in last year's tri-nations? who came tenth in the tour de france? of course winning is everything. no matter what it costs. everyone has equal access to performance enhancing drugs. you can choose not to take them, just like you can choose not to train daily.

      Squeegee - 2012-08-30 07:08

jaded, you can also choose to steal or rape. Just because the opportunity arises and some choose to use that opportunity to satisfy their own twisted desires does not make it acceptable.

      jaded.oldfart - 2012-08-30 11:21

squeegee - we are not talking about rape or theft - we are talking about reaching the pinnacle of personal performance. what next - all athletes are forced to live at sea-level, because the ones who train at altitude have an unfair advantage? don't obfuscate the topic with irrevelant red herrings.

No one is gaining anything by Lances beheading. Except the beheadors? Besides, what has a U.S court got to do with the Tour De France? Last time I check ed the U.S was quite far from ruling the world. Do Americans even know where France is?

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-08-29 23:42

The wankers don't even have jurisdiction over the TDF.

  • denese.newby - 2012-08-30 01:08

Someone is sooooo jealous of his achievements. Jealousy always causes things like this to happen. When someone is in the limelight for whatever reason, there will always be those who try to to bring the person down because they're so eaten up with jealousy! Lance won the Tour de France SEVEN times IN A ROW. Titles or no titles - HE DID IT!!!

  • juannepierre - 2012-08-30 02:57

He is doing more for cancer than anybody else... But I guess cancer isn't such an important issue?

  • Vickela Mumby - 2012-08-30 03:04

    Fallen from grace!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:32

Never, follow him on Facebook and Twitter, see the support he has, it is unwavering.

  • michael.barns.1 - 2012-08-30 08:23

Of course you are bro, and Ben Johnson still won the 100m in 1988 Olympics, but you guys still cheated. ps. I also got 95% for a History test in Matric, but I cheated.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:33

Prove that he cheated, or shut up and sit down.

  • sharkie.fin - 2012-08-30 09:16

    ummmmm no you're not.............

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:33

      Um yes he did..

  • kyle.mclaren1 - 2012-08-30 10:49

Let's get one thing straight. As the governing body of the Tour de France, only the UCI (International Cycling Union) can"strip" Lance of his titles. In fact, they have supported him with previous legal efforts against the USADA. This USADA's authority does not extend beyond Olympic matters (as they are commissioned by the Olympic committee), which is why Lance will have to return a bronze medal, various cash and prizes and that is where the "lifetime ban" comes in. As far as I know, the UCI have still not made a statement regarding the latest USADA ruling. Lance's titles stand.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:34

Actually they have, they stand behind him.

  • - 2012-08-30 11:51

the dude cheated, end of story. Great man and athlete that he is, and all the good things he has done, will remain. But he cheated. Same as Hansie, best captain blah blah blah, but he cheated.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-08-30 14:34

Where is the proof? He was tested over 500 time and every test came back negative. there is NO EVIDENCE of his cheating... get a life.
