Buys wins cross-country title

Johannesburg - Olympian Philip Buys and Samantha Sanders claimed the elite cross-country (XCO) titles at the 2013 SA-MTB National Championships in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Buys completed seven laps of the technical 4.2km XCO course in one hour, 24 minutes and 26 seconds (1:24:26) to secure his national title.

Matthys Beukes finished in second place, ahead of XCO stalwart Ben-Melt Swanepoel who was third at the Hayterdale Trails.

In the women's race, Sanders took top honours in her six laps, in 1:28:25, with Amy Mcdougall finishing second and Cherie Vale third.

Rourke Croeser won the hotly contested under-23 men's category in 01:11:37, two seconds ahead of the chasing James Reid. Gert Heyns wrapped up the podium positions in 01:12:26.

Mariske Strauss dominated the five-lap women's u23 race, winning in 1:09:01.

The junior categories were won by Alan Hatherly and Bianca Haw.

The national downhill title was being decided on Sunday.
