Corrie a gentle giant - Durandt

Johannesburg - Former world heavyweight boxing champion Corrie Sanders, shot dead in a robbery, was laid to rest at a funeral in in Pretoria on Monday with friends saying he was a gentle man who gave his life to save others.

Sanders, 46, was shot in the arm and the stomach when robbers raided a restaurant near Brits, in North West Province, where he and other family members were attending a birthday party for his nephew nine days ago.

Relatives said Sanders used his body to shield his daughter when the robbers started shooting.

"He was a gentle giant - a guy who was dangerous in the ring but harmless outside of it," boxing promoter Nick Durandt told reporters after the funeral held at a church in Pretoria and attended by hundreds of mourners.

Police last week arrested three suspects - all Zimbabwean citizens - who appeared before a court in Brits, 80 km northwest of Johannesburg, on Monday to face charges of murder and armed robbery, SAPA news agency said.

Southpaw Sanders, nicknamed "The Sniper" because of his fierce and quick left, won the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) heavyweight title in 2003 with a surprise knockout of Ukraine's Vladimir Klitschko. He lost only four of his 46 professional fights.

So sad, it might even be illegal emigrants that killed Corrie, there's no respect for the law and life in SA. How can we tolerate Zimbabweans where the word respect for others don't even exist, these animals that came to SA and continue this type of carnage!? There's enough problems between South Africans already.. Our government need to make a statement and bring back the death penalty ASAP!

I dont hanging will help, this man was gunned infront of his family. Personally I feel we should drag them around in the back of a bakkie and necklace them. Whether Corrie was white the fact is he was murdered and believe I feel for his kids. crime is getting out of hand, what happened to honest working, back home in the then Transkei every man worked. I miss the days when we respected uniform and law.

May his sould rest in peace, and may his killers rot in hell. We are all sick of this terrible crimes on innocent victims. How do we grow as country when we still have such heartless animals roaming our streets and invading our houses, abusing our children. Makes me sick I tell you.

What makes it even worse, is because it was white/ black again, you unfortunately get people that only look at that, it could've been anybody, black/black, white/ white, this however was reported, so it's everywhere, and yes, they are zimbabweans, but to some that is just a bonus in their own little race war. It doesn't matter who kills who, it's the new "sport". and it sucks big time.
