SA women to take on Fiji for minor places in Sevens

Gold Coast - The Springbok women's Sevens team will face Fiji at the Commonwealth Games at Robina Stadium on Sunday and will be determined to secure a first win at the event.

The SA women lost their final pool match 19-10 to Kenya Saturday and will now be involved in the lower-tier competition of the tournament, with final placings at stake.

Wales and Kenya are the other two teams in the bottom draw to determine places 5-8.

Against Kenya, two tries by their opponents saw the South Africans trail 14-0, but two well-worked tries by Mathrin Simmers and Zenay Jordaan saw the lead cut back to one score.

South Africa attacked well, but could not make use of their opportunities and a late score by Kenya sealed their fate.

"We did not use our opportunities and that cost us," said captain, Zintle Mpupha.

"We need to regroup once we are back home and start working even harder that before. We have seen how Kenya improved, but we did not used the opportunities we had."

The SA women were thrashed 29-0 by Canada and 41-0 by New Zealand in their earlier two pool matches.

The match against Fiji will kick-off at 01:31 (SA time).
