Le Clos impresses, advances at the Gold Coast

Cape Town - South Africa's Chad le Clos has advanced through to the final and semi-final of the men's 200m butterfly and the 100m freestyle, respectively, on Saturday at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Le Clos, who is the defending champion, did what he had to do to qualify and finished third in the men's 200m butterfly in a time of 1:57.89.

Canada's Darragh Mackenzie won the race in 1:56.96, while South Africa's Eben Vorster finished sixth in his heat in 2:00.72 for 12th overall and missed out of the final.

In the men's 100m freestyle heats, Le Clos booked his place in the the semi-finals with a 49.17 swim.

Australia's Jack Cartwright, who came through to win the heat in the last 50m with the South African finishing second. This left Le Clos seventh fastest going into the semi-finals.

South Africa's Calvyn Justus finished seventh in the same race with a 50.06 for 20th overall and missed out on the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Tatjana Schoenmaker continued her strong form in the women's 200m breaststroke heats when she won her race with a fast 2:23.57 and went into the final as the No 1 seed.

18-year-old Kaylene Corbett finished third in her 200m breaststroke heat with a time of 2:27.68 and qualified for the final in seventh overall spot.

Emma Chelius and Erin Gallagher both finished fourth in the women's 50m butterfly heats. Gallagher touched the wall in a time of 27.05 to qualify for the semi-finals as eighth fastest, while Chelius qualified 13th overall with her time of 27.55.
