Schoeman in the clear

New Delhi – SASCOC Chef de Mission Patience Shikwambana has cleared Team South Africa swimmer Roland Schoeman of any breach of conduct.

Schoeman false started in Friday’s men’s 50m freestyle semi-final because of crowd noise.

Afterwards Schoeman was asked why he seemed annoyed with the crowd and he reportedly told the international media that a member in the audience was acting like a monkey.

Schoeman met with Shikwambana on Friday night to explain his annoyance at the disruption and also to dispel media reports that there was malice or a racist reference.

Shikwambana said the swimmer had been frustrated at the noise, which had contributed to the false start and that she accepted the sincerity of his explanation.

“Given the media enquiries there definitely has been a misinterpretation of what he said. We consider the matter dealt with and Roland’s focus now is on winning a medal in the final on Saturday evening,” said Shikwambana.

Schoeman, South Africa’s most celebrated Commonwealth Games medallist, is aiming to improve on his SA record 10 Games’ medals.
