Schoeman, Le Clos bag medals

Cape Town - South African swimmers, Roland Schoeman and Chad le Clos, claimed respective silver and bronze medals in the 50m butterfly final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday night.

England’s Benjamin Proud won gold in a record 22.93 seconds, Schoeman silver in 23.13 and Le Clos bronze in 23.36.

The winner, 19-year-old Proud, claimed a British record as well as a Commonwealth Games record.

It was the second time in two days that Proud had beaten the Commonwealth record having also done so in qualifying on Thursday.

"I don't know what to say. I just treated it like any other race, but now tears are almost in my eyes," Proud told AFP.

And the more experienced Schoeman acknowledged he had been beaten by the better man.

"I knew it was going to be tough. Proud is a talented athlete," said the 34-year-old.

"I'm happy to get second."
