While it may be hard to determine if the event was staged or not, the WWE issued a statement which suggests the incident was not part of the planned events.

The statement issued by the WWE on its website read:

"WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton was violently attacked by an audience member during a SmackDown World Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this evening (Tuesday). Footage of the attack was captured by a WWE fan and posted to YouTube, and shows the perpetrator striking Orton from behind. The matter is currently under investigation by the local authorities, and the South African fan is being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton's injuries are unknown at this time."

The 33-year-old Orton, who is 1.96m tall and weighs 107kg, started his WWE career in 2002.

Why, may I ask is this story under "Sport" 24???

      Chris Lategan - 2013-07-31 14:06

Because it's 'Sports' entertainment. Sure, it's choreographed, but they still have to be pretty athletic to do what they do.

      Sebidon Rhesus - 2013-07-31 15:11

@Chris. But if it is scripted, there is no real competition, and if there is no competition, then it can't be classified as sport.

      Gershwin Music-man Bazier - 2013-08-01 10:33

but is cricket not scripted too

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-08-01 19:23

      Silenta Solly - 2013-08-01 08:51

When i found out that wrestling was scripted, i hated the thing and stopped watching it

      Pagel - 2013-08-01 09:34

@Mickey: Sport is real - go ask Lance, Hansie, Ben Johnson. WWE is entertainment (for some people) and these guys are incredible athletic and obviously have trained extremely hard to do what they do - and no I don't follow it. To claim it is real is to claim a Sci-Fi movie is real. I don't like Sci-Fi movies, but hey some people do - each on to his own and allow people freedom to choose what they like and don't like as long as it does not impact on you.

  • Blackhole_Sun - 2013-07-31 14:00

Wwe wrestlers are a bunch of fake panzy girls. Put a ufc fighter up against one of them and see what happens..

      Pagel - 2013-08-01 09:37

There are many WWE stars that will sweep the floor with a UFC fighter - Kurt Angle won an Olympic Gold in amateur wrestling - good on him to go on and make some money out of something he was extremely good at.

  • Unathi Ndabambi - 2013-07-31 14:32

  • Snoopy John - 2013-07-31 21:30

  • Graham Radburnd - 2013-08-01 00:07
