Botha 'offered' R1.4m bribe

2013-02-13 07:08

Sydney - Veteran South African boxer Francois Botha on Wednesday claimed he was offered $155 000 (R1.4m) to throw his fight against Sonny Bill Williams, sparking an angry denial from the New Zealander's manager.

Williams, a former World Cup-winning All Blacks rugby star, won the controversial heavyweight bout on points in Brisbane last Friday, which was marred by unsubstantiated reports that Botha failed a drugs test.

Botha, 44, alleges Williams' manager Khoder Nasser offered him the money in a Brisbane park three days before the World Boxing Association fight, claiming he received a phone call asking to pick him up alone.

"I wasn't told where I was going. As we stopped at a park, my cellphone was confiscated and was given to a guy in the car," Botha told New Zealand's Radio LiveSport from Durban.

"Then I was being walked (by Nasser), and during this walk, I was offered A$150 000 to throw the fight.

"I just said 'no, I can't do it'."

There is no suggestion that Williams was aware of the alleged offer.

Nasser slammed Botha as a bad loser after a fight that ended in 10 rounds, despite earlier promotions saying it was a 12-round contest.

"I think he (Botha) is still in a daze," Nasser told Fairfax Media of a man who has fought Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klitschko and Evander Holyfield in a 23-year career.

"This is the same bloke who said he didn't know about the fight being 10 rounds, and then his promoter and he himself came out later and said it was 10 rounds.

"Then he said he wasn't drugs tested and then he said he was tested. Then he said he was tested by my brother, and now he has come up with this one. What is next?

"He has got to come to terms with the reality that he got his ass whipped by a guy who had had only five fights.

"It is all well and good to come out with all these allegations after, but where's his manhood? It's absolute madness.

"If it happened like he said, why didn't he come out and report it then - or does it suit him now?"

While Williams won the fight, he was on the receiving end of some heavy blows from Botha in the 10th round with the South African saying another two rounds would have been enough to secure him victory.

Bookmakers refunded bets on Williams's win due to the controversy over how long the fight was supposed to be.

Doubts have also been raised about whether the WBA actually sanctioned the bout, and if Williams' claim on the title is legitimate.

There was no WBA official present in Brisbane for the fight.

    Somehow i believe Botha.......

Is there an group more corrupt, unethical or despicable than boxing promoters?

      boereroo.jackman - 2013-02-13 07:39

Soccer, Rugby league, Cycling and Crab racers

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-02-13 07:48

Who believers any of these guys? Many sports lovers want to hold on to the illusion that "one of ours" is not involved. From the time they announced this fight I said it would be fixed - now its just unraveling and they are like rats running for cover...

      johan.mostert.967 - 2013-02-13 08:07

Where there is bets there will be bribes.

      elgh.elgh - 2013-02-13 08:13

But you have lost the fight, so no cash in, tell them you threw the fight.

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2013-02-13 08:18

Botha is the guy who denounced SA when he went to the states for his own promotion, then he embraced Madiba and became a self proclaimed spokes man for SA, he has embarrassed himself in every fight he has had, the only fights he has had glory were against absolute nobodies. All boxers talk smack but they usually do it before the fight, he is a has been never been, just because he now claims his roots does not mean we should support this cheating fat tub of lard. Sonny Bill is a perfect in shape professional sportsman, he showed his gentleman and professional status in that fight, but a boxer he is not, shows you how crap Botha really is, next fight Sonny Bill V Freddy Flintoff,

      bafana.ndlovu.9026 - 2013-02-13 09:14

Botha took Tyson all the way and knocked out Klitcsho to become world champ in 03, he would not accept a bribe

      DOC - 2013-02-13 09:28

Please note that Nassar does not deny making the overture, instead he redirects the focus to Botha's integrity. Anybody familiar with interrogation will tell you that he is lying or at the very least being deceptive. Also, this thing happens all the time but is seldom if ever reported, Botha spoke out this time because the whole fight ended up being a sham and with these amount of irregularities and an impending inquisition it will all come to light anyway. Either way, the promoters must be smacking their lips, a better script for a rematch and a sellout show has not been written since Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran squared up. I for one will pay good money to watch it, not for the quality of boxing that Leonard and Duran could dish up but just for the mere entertainment value.

      rodney.johnson.948 - 2013-02-13 20:17

Bafanna Ndlovu, you my friend have no idea what you talking about. I don't know if you doing it on purpose. lol but ur knowledge of boxing is dangerous!

  • niel.walt - 2013-02-13 07:20

No-one cares anymore! I predict next headline - Botha and Nasser in steamy affair, SBW trapped in the middle -

      boereroo.jackman - 2013-02-13 07:25

Haha. I can't wait for this spicy saga to continue. "This is the days of our lives"

      niel.walt - 2013-02-13 07:29

Lol its rediculous actually! The people that setup this fight should go work for the WWE

      boereroo.jackman - 2013-02-13 07:33

      You can say that again

      andrew.gordon.505523 - 2013-02-13 09:18

Seriously. Botha you lost. Stop coming up with all this crap, not saying it didn't happen, But all i hear is complaining

  • brett.step - 2013-02-13 07:25

The plot thickens ... worse then a badly written soap opera.

  • piet.pompies.12 - 2013-02-13 07:25

Whahahaha will Botha just the hell shut up and get over it!! He make SA looks very bad!!

      boereroo.jackman - 2013-02-13 07:36

No let him speak. Every time you get a good spokesperson such as Peter de Villiers you want to shut them up. We like listening to them.

  • TC - 2013-02-13 07:28

Asseblief Francois Botha, stop spewing cr@p! You did not deserve a win. You were terrible. And now all of this bad-lipping, sulking just does further damage to yourself. Take it on the nose and shut-up.

  • david.makgopa.3 - 2013-02-13 07:29

  • john.silver.3572846 - 2013-02-13 08:07

SBW is a class athlete that has been hooked by a real rubbish in Nasser. Some great men have been bought down by promoters and managers through the years. I hope SBW see's the light and just sticks to what he does best - play footie

  • dan.mccaw.16 - 2013-02-13 08:09

Excuses........ Excuses............ Excuses............ Just like SARU when the Springboks lose a game. Blame the ref, blame the wet grass, blame the weather why not even blame your president Zuma for what its worth. Botha you lost the match. Dust off your khaki jacket, take a drink of Klipdrift and Cola and call it a day.

  • frederick.vanzyl - 2013-02-13 08:12

I didn't watch the fight, wan't interested. Reason, last year when SBW was challenged, he simply was not interested, but now since not playing for the AB's and Crusaders his brand took a knock. This was all about brand building. Come on ppl it was just to try and improve SBW's own worth. I predicted before the fight that it was going to be a SBW win, hell I thought Botha was paid already, lmao.

      rodney.johnson.948 - 2013-02-13 20:03

My friend u need to get your facts straight. SBW donated all his match fees of his previous fight for charity. This man is extremely wealthy, money was never a issue. Botha was in it for the money cause he can't afford a proper protien diet! lmao!!!!

  • Ghostfacekillah - 2013-02-13 08:13

Mr Botha, instead of coming up with all these stories, why don't u just ask for a rematch so we can really see who deserves to win because all these stories u coming!!!!

  • sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2013-02-13 08:17

    What a holy sh*t!!

  • manfred.meyer - 2013-02-13 08:19

Really? You come out with this now only? I'm starting to think that this entire debacle was staged. The 10 rounds rather then 12 etc in order to stir up controversy. This all builds up the hype for the next fight, which will be an even bigger draw card and money spinner. Either all parties involved are incredibly stupid or they are the pinnacle of marketing strategy.

      moeketsilesetla - 2013-02-13 09:04

      I agree with u

  • Hansie.Crook - 2013-02-13 08:22

Raymond, maybe true what u saying. If we dragg race over 800m and I beat you by 10th of a second, my friend its over. Sonny Bill won the overall of the fight so in my eyes its a win!

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2013-02-13 08:33

What a sordid mess this all is. Australian boxing board of control ,both boxers and their camps,SA boxing board ALL need to be investigated by the International boxing board and all convicted need to be charged.

  • Jimmy NZ - 2013-02-13 08:42

Botha has been caught doping before... IBF refuses to acknowledge him as a figher! Why all the stories a week later! He's a fat palooka who's been knocked out by most boxers that matter and his career is over! SBW should stick to rugby and get away from this Mundine character, he seems very shady! But seriously over all this so called boxing cr@p on a rugby forum!!!!

  • Abdulcarrim Essa - 2013-02-13 08:48

Martin Blikhout, die boer het op sy moer gekry. Daar is niks om te settle nie. Admit the guy is a bomber, on the field and off the field. I bet Sonny Bill can show your girl a few tricks as well!!! lmao

  • William - 2013-02-13 08:51

Nasser should manage Botha, they deserve each other and leave SBW alone

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2013-02-13 09:09

Frans Botha shouldn't have shouted his mouth about giving SBW a hiding. Frans Botha kept saying that SBW doesn't deserve to be in the ring with him and shouldn't be a boxer. If Sonny Bill Williams isn't a so called boxer by Frans Botha's standards , why couldn't the white buffalo knock him out as he predicted and why did he even let the bout go to the scorecards and 10 rounds. Go and watch SBW video's before the fight and see how humble he was about Frans Botha as a fighter and about the bout. Frans, maybe a good lesson for you, stay humble no matter what the outcome.
