Knysna Cycle Tour a success

Knysna - Participants of the Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour conquered the mountains and roads of Knysna and surrounds over the weekend of July 5-6.

Cold temperatures and gusty winds meant the fire pits at the main festival grounds on Waterfront Drive – the start and finish of both races – were a welcome relief.

Despite the chilly weather on both days, spirits were high with live entertainment at the festival grounds throughout the afternoons.

James Reid won the men’s 80km mountain bike race on Saturday, July 5 with a time of 03:03:00, with Darren Lill coming in a close second followed by Matthew Beers taking the third spot on the podium.

The ladies’ 80km mountain bike race was won by Lise Olivier who took first place in 03:40:04, followed by Ashleigh Moffatt and Hannele Steyn in second and third place respectively.

The men’s division 100km road race was won by David Maree on Sunday, July 6 with a time of 02:53:39. JC Nel took second position and Waylon Woolcock secured the third place.

Andriette Schoeman won the ladies’ 100km road race once again, this time in 03:02:43, with Lise Olivier coming in second and Carmen Buchacher closing the ranks of the ladies’ top three road racers.

Riders complimented the organizers for a well planned day and the improved, more scenic routes.

The main venue is open to the public with daily live music each day of the festival, from now until July 13.
