Boonstra to close off in style

Cape Town - XTERRA warrior, Lieuwe Boonstra will close off his XTERRA SA professional racing career on Thursday, 07 July when he takes part in the DueSouth XTERRA Knysna presented by Rehidtrat Sport at the majestic Pezula Private Estate.

This much loved event promises to be an extra special experience for Boonstra, who will be enjoying his final professional XTERRA race on home soil.

According to Boonstra, he’ll always be involved in the sport of XTERRA.  “I’ll never stop taking part in XTERRA races I just won’t do so on a professional level anymore.  I’d really like to start focusing on mountain bike stage races such as the Wines2Whales. Above all I am really looking forward to spending some time at home, between work and training I only see my house and my fiancé in the dark,” laughs Boonstra.

“My most memorable XTERRA moment would have to be when I was crowned SA Champion in 2009, that was really special,” continues Boonstra.  “Securing a second place in Japan in 2010 was also so surreal. The sport of XTERRA has been really good to me so I’d like to stay involved and give back to the sport as much as possible”.

After Knysna Boonstra plans on taking part in Japan and hopefully Mexico before retiring from the professional circuit at the end of the year.

The Knysna race is the only XTERRA SA event that does not feature a water discipline, but instead follows a run/bike/run format. Forming part of the much loved Knysna Oyster Festival and Big 5 Challenge, participants can take part individually or in teams of two.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
