Timing and points scoring

This year the event will be timed using the tried and tested Sportident timing system, managed by the capable team from Magnetic South events in Knysna.

Each athlete will receive a dibber at registration which will be coded to the participant for the week of the Challenge and carry a specific electronic ID enabling participant identification on the line when their time is taken electronically at the SI station on the finish line.

All Big5 athletes will receive the same start times as they will be either leaving in a dedicated big five batch (mtb) or in a mass start scenario as for the Half Marathon, Duesouth XTERRA and the Trail Run.

On the finish line there will be Big5 marshals to assist participants in “dibbering out” at the sportident stations.

Points system

Points scored will be used to determine the athletes overall positions in the Big5, not their overall time.

In this case less is most definitely more!

Participants will be awarded points for the position they dibber out in! Times will still be taken at the SI stations but only used to break a tie situation, should one arise.

The first athlete will be awarded one point, the second one two points etc until the last athlete crosses the line scoring well over 100 points.

At the end of the week the athlete with the least points will be the winner.

And in a first for the event, Sport24 will publish the full leaderboard after every Big5 event, letting the public know exactly how each athlete is progressing …
