Cape Town - Legal Eagle has been installed as the overwhelming favourite to land a hat-trick of L'Ormarins Queen's Plate victories at Kenilworth racecourse on Saturday.
Leading SA bookmakers BET.co.za have the former Markus Jooste-owned dual SA Horse of the Year as 7/10 favourite, followed by Captain America and Gold Standard at 13/2.
Legal Eagle will once again be ridden by star jockey Anton Marcus and has been drawn in stall No 2 in the 12-horse field.
Legal Eagle was previously owned by Jooste, horse breeder and racing fanatic, who quit as Steinhoff International Holdings NV CEO late last year after the discovery of suspected financial wrongdoing.
Shares in the global clothing and furniture retailer crashed 85% following the news, wiping a staggering €11bn (R176bn) from the value of the company.
Subsequently, businessman and passionate racehorse owner Braam van Huyssteen bought Legal Eaglefrom Mayfair Speculators (Pty) Ltd for an undisclosed sum.
Mayfair Speculators is the company which deals with Jooste's horseracing interests.
Van Huyssteen is the founder and former owner of Tekkie Town which is a subsidiary of Steinhoff.
The R1.5 million Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate over 1 600m at Kenilworth racecourse on Saturday, January 6 is due to start at 16:40.
