Semenya leads SA contingent in Eugene

Cape Town - Three South African athletes will carry the flag on Saturday night when they take on some the world's best in their respective disciplines at the third stop of the IAAF Diamond League series in Eugene, Oregon.

World champion Caster Semenya, who won the 1 500m race at the first leg of the series in Doha earlier this month, will compete in the 800m Women event.

She faces a full-strength field which features perennial rivals Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi and Margaret Wambui of Kenya, as well as rising American star Ajee Wilson.

In the 200m men race, former World Championships medallist Anaso Jobodwana, will go into the blocks against world champion Ramil Guliyev of Turkey, powerhouse sprinter Isaac Makwala of Botswana and 20-year-old speedster Noah Lyles of the United States.

Also lining up against the global elite in a strong field, Dominique Scott-Efurd will go toe-to-toe in the 5 000m women battle, with world champion Hellen Obiri of Kenya spearheading the field.

Schedule of SA athletes competing in Eugene (SA times):

10:10pm - 800m women (Caster Semenya)

11:10pm - 5 000m women (Dominique Scott-Efurd)

11:45pm - 200m men (Anaso Jobodwana)
