SA impaling survivor gives Comrades medal to surgeon

Johannesburg - A South African man who completed the Comrades Marathon earlier this month after recovering from a 2015 impaling accident, has given his medal to the trauma surgeon who treated him.

Netcare Milpark Hospital said on Wednesday that Daniel de Wet finished the 90.184km ultra-marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban in 11:30:37, well inside the 12-hour cut-off time.

The hospital added that De Wet thanked Kenneth Boffard and his team who extracted a 1.8m (5.9-foot) crowbar after it entered his groin area and exited his back, narrowly missing his heart, in January 2015.

De Wet, an engineering supervisor, was working on washing out a dam 3.5km underground at a mine in Carletonville, Gauteng, using an extended crowbar to stir up the mud, when he suddenly slipped.

De Wet, who lost a kidney in the accident, had run the Comrades on six occasions prior to his accident.

The hospital confirmed Boffard had challenged him to run it again and quotes the surgeon as saying, "Can you believe it, he actually took me seriously."
