Cape Town - There was mixed success for the South African trio of men's 100m runners in the heats at the IAAF World Championships in Doha on Friday.

Running in Heat 1, Akani Simbine took first place in a time of 10.01 - the second fastest overall time heading into the semi-finals.

However, not so lucky were Simon Magakwe and Thando Dlodlo.

Contesting Heat 3, Magakwe stopped the clock in a time of 10.25 which was good enough for fourth place. With only the top three and the next sixth fastest times progressing, Magakwe was left pondering what might have been.

Dlodlo posted the same time as his compatriot Magakwe (10.25) in Heat 5, with his effort only good enough for sixth place in a competitive race.

American star Christian Coleman, shrouded in controversy in the lead-up to the championships for missing mandatory doping tests, posted the fastest time of 9.98.

The semi-finals will take place on Saturday (15:45 SA time), with the final scheduled for later in the evening (19:15 SA time).
