Viljoen, 32, finished fourth in the javelin at the 2012 London Olympics.

Mokoena, 31, meanwhile, won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but finished eighth in London in the long jump.

The pair will join swimmers Roland Schoeman and Ryk Neethling, and athlete Hendrick Ramaala as the only South Africans to have appeared at four Olympic Games.

The Rio Olympics will run from August 5-21.
