Manyonga leaps to SA long jump title

Cape Town - Rio 2016 Olympic long jump silver medalist Luvo Manyonga has added the 2017 SA senior athletics championship title to his CV.

Manyonga broke his own SA and Africa record with a first round leap of 8.65 - breaking his previous record by 3cm.

It proved to be Manyonga's only leap of the contest as he sat out the remaining rounds.

Ruswahl Samaai took the runners-up spot in 8.49, while Zarck Visser completed the podium in 8.03.

It was the first time in SA athletics championship history that all three medalists surpassed the magical 8m barrier.

American Mike Powell holds the current men's long jump record with 8.95m, a mark Manyonga has set his sights on.
