New York - South African wheelchair racer Ernst van Dyk has narrowly lost out on winning the New York Marathon on Sunday, finishing in second place, a second behind Australia's Kurt Fearnley.
SBS reports that a pack of six riders were in the mix approaching the finish in the final kilometre, with Fearnley breaking free in the final stretch to clock a time of 1:30:55 seconds.
Van Dyk finished a mere second behind, narrowly missing out on a second New York title after first winning the race in 2005.
It would have been his second major marathon triumph of the year after capturing his 10th Boston Marathon title earlier this year.
