Threats stop Soweto Marathon

Johannesburg - Thousands of marathon runners were left disappointed this weekend after the Soweto Marathon failed to take place - due to a threatening email that was sent by former sports administrator Benele Sindani.

The Sunday Times reported that Sindani, who represents the Soweto Marathon Trust, sent a threat to race organisers warning them that should they go in to the township, they would not come out.

The email was written two months ago but made public on Friday by Athletics SA president James Evans.

This latest twist comes after the department of sport’s interception earlier this month to try to save the marathon.

At the time it was cited that a lack of funds was the reason for the marathon being cancelled.

However, race promoter Nick Bester found a sponsor, but the company withdrew immediately after being shown a copy of Sindani’s email.
