Cape Town - Capetonian Lindikhaya Mhtangayi of the Lion of Africa Itheko Sport Athletic Club clocked 2:17:02 to see off the challenge of second-placed Kenyan Paul Manwa of the Toyota running club (2:17:50) to claim the R20 000 first prize at the Cape Town Marathon 2013 on Sunday, September 22.
Capetonian Pumlani Nxusani of the Nedbank running club was third across the finish line outside the Cape Town Stadium in a time of 2:19:06, as the Mother City blessed runners with a perfect day following weeks of wind, rain and even snow.
The first woman home in the marathon was Zimbabwean Samukeliso Moyo of Maxed Elite in 2:42:46, second was South African Kim Laxton of Sunninghill Striders in a personal best of 2:43:23 and third South African Cary-Ann Smith Nedbank Athletic Club in 2:49:21.
The 10km men’s race was a tightly contested affair with just three seconds separating the top three runners - South African Xolisa Tyali of Nedbank Central Gauteng defended the title he won in 2012 and claimed the R5 000 winner’s prize in 30:09 ahead of Zimbabwean Givemore Mudzinganyama of Bidvest in 30:11 and South African Lungile Gongqa of the Cheetah Athletic Club in 30:12.
The women’s 10km title and R5 000 first prize was claimed by South African Nolene Conrad of ABSA Athletics Club in 36:18, with South African Thozama April of Transnet second in 36:34 and Zimbabwe’s Fortunate Chidzivo of Maxed Elite third in 36:50.
The marathon and 10km races started in the Cape Town Stadium Forecourt at 06.30, with the routes looping back to finish at the Forecourt.
Race director Sue Forge congratulated the winners.
“Thankfully the wind and rain... and snow, of the past week stayed away and the race winners, men and women, provided excellent racing action.”
The Cape Town Marathon grows in popularity year on year with the 2013 event drawing a record number of entries across all races.
“We thank everyone who took part for supporting the Cape Town Marathon, watch this space, as we have exciting developments for 2014,” Forge said.
Supported by the City of Cape Town, Cape Town Tourism, Western Cape Government: Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Peninsula Beverages, the Cape Town Marathon is an opportunity to get involved in a big city event while promoting a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle.
