Cape Town - Zarck Visser and Robert Oosthuizen competed at the Daegu Championships Meeting in Korea on Wednesday where both athletes were competing in order to achieve the Olympic Qualifying A-standard in their various events.

Javelin thrower Oosthuizen has not reached the 80m mark since June 2011 after a shoulder injury and needed 82m in order to reach the Olympic Qualifying A-Standard. He finished 6th with a throw of 74.63m. Dmitri Tarabin (RUS) won with 82.75m while Ari Mannio (FIN) and Igor Janik (POL) took second and third position respectively, their distances measured at 81.06m and 80.23m.

The 22-year-old Visser aimed for the 8.20m Olympic Qualifying Standard in the long jump. He caused an upset at the National Championships in Port Elizabeth in April by beating Khotso Mokoena, but on Wednesday finished 6th in the men’s event with his best jump measured at 7.79m.

The winner, Ignisious Gaisah (GHA), jumped 7.99m with Latvian athlete Elvijs Misans second with 7.96m. George Kitchens (USA) finished third (7.92m). Visser reached 8.15m at the SA Open Championships in Pretoria on 4 May.

Visser’s next event will be in Dessau, Germany on 25 May, while Oosthuizen will compete at the Samsung Diamond League in Shanghai on 19 May.
