'Fat' Caster clashes with coach

2011-08-17 09:52

Wilhelm de Swardt - Beeld

Pretoria - There appears to be something seriously wrong with Caster Semenya, South Africa’s women’s 800m world champion.

These are the rumours doing the rounds over the past few weeks in local athletics circles.

Those in the know predict Semenya will struggle to defend her 800m title in 10 days time at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Athletes who train with her at Tukkies’ LC de Villiers stadium say that she is regularly late for her practice sessions and does her own thing at training.

It is also reported she is overweight.

The most worrying rumour is that the relationship between Semenya and her coach, Michael Seme, is not what it should be.

Semenya’s agent, Jukka Härkönen, should apparently shoulder the blame for that.

The reason why Semenya decided not to take part in the recent IAAF World University Games is not only because she had problems with a back injury. Härkönen apparently advised her to withdraw because there wasn’t enough prize money.

It was not the first time that Härkönen has harmed the relationship between a South African athlete and their coach.

Härkönen is the reason why Khotso Mokoena has not been mentored by a recognised long jump coach for the past two years. Mokoena’s performances over the past 24 months paint a grim picture.

He hardly participated last year due to injury and this year struggled to qualify for the World Championships.

If this year’s statistics are taken into account, there is reason for concern. Semenya’s list of performances are nothing to get excited about.

Semenya currently holds the 13th best 800m time this year. Her best run of 1:58.61 is almost two seconds slower than Russia's Mariya Savinova 1:56.95 world leading effort.

The only Diamond League success Semenya has enjoyed was in Paris where her winning time was a modest 2:00.18.

At the Diamond League meet in Stockholm, a clearly overweight Semenya finished eighth with 2:01.28.

Statistics for the past two years show clearly how Semenya’s performances since the 2009 World Championships, when she won the gold medal in Berlin in a time of 1:55.45, have deteriorated.

In 2009 Semenya could boast having two of the fastest times in the world.

Her winning time of 1:56.72 at the Junior Africa meet in Mauritius that year was the second fastest. Last year she was only the sixth fastest athlete with a time of 1:58.16.

So it would appear Semenya in three years has become almost three seconds slower.

The question that urgently needs an answer is if Semenya is still good enough to beat the best in the world.

Max, you should realy leave the homour to people with an IQ over 60. For your own sake, if you feel like saying something you think is funny - don't.

      George - 2011-08-17 11:10

The problem with Caster started when they performed a secret gender corrective surgery on her. She has never been the same. Her male testerone ratio's dropped drammatically after the corrective surgery, her performance dipped as she was running like a full woman. The reason she is gaining weight is because the corrective surgery was a success. Her female hormones are now raging.

It happens so often when a spotsman gets too big for the game. Seen it in all sports.

tshepo.theman. Like I said you are either crosseyed ,blind or just plain simple. You equate weight gain as a sign of pregnancy. There are more reasons that makes a woman gain weight. You my freind has elephantitis of the brain. You go SEMENYA .

      Elizabeth - 2011-08-17 16:21

@ SiphovdMerwe - Seriously? Just whites? Come on now. Did you forget about people like Kolobe, Tshepo, Poloyatonki? You don't have to be white to be rude! Sis man. Stop seeing race so much, it makes you just as bad.

      Barry - 2011-08-17 17:05

@ Blue To me it looks like a horse feeding

      GraemeBB - 2011-08-17 17:46

@Shipho - again I say, it happens when a person gets too big for the sport. No reference to culture, colour nor creed. I am also not being sport specific. But as for that 2 cents, let me add mine. The hormones dont make you late, argue with your coach and do your own thing during training. If you ask me, this is when she should be focused more than before, as this could be a turning point in her career. I have seen it so many times before, havent you?

      Kevin - 2011-08-17 20:06

      SiphovdMerwe you are so right.

  • Superdude - 2011-08-17 10:03

I don’t blame her for having issues after all that she has been through over the past two years. Chastised by our own government and ridiculed in the change room before every race by her competitors – shows incredible bravery to overcome.

      shaunkd - 2011-08-17 10:33

I agree with you dude. All the posts are from people who have no clue as to what the pressure is at the top. I'd like to see these ppl run a 800m in under 2 min.

      I agree.

Yep, she's definitely showed she has balls

      Shark-Chic - 2011-08-17 11:18

Couldn't agree more. All that crap she has been through in the past year is probably to blame! Sad for a talent like that to go down the drain!

      PunkBuster - 2011-08-17 14:28

Agreed Superdude. Must have been tough to take the relentless ridicule that she did, especially with it being public. Thats what made her a role model and country hero.. Taking the circumstance she was dealt and making the best of it. I however think that her time in the lime light is over.

  • Ian - 2011-08-17 10:06

oh well thats the end of that, fat, doing its own thing at training, slower at track meets, cheers

Her whole training program should be monitored and if she doesn't conform to that, she should be taken off the program where athletes are paid huge amounts to enable them to perform!! How can we allow these "Managers" to mess up our athletes? He who pays the money should call the tune!!

  • Yes_no - 2011-08-17 10:13

All the male hormones are out of her system and now she is slower. Not rocket science people.

      Phelpsfan - 2011-08-17 10:24

Agree completely! The treatment she had was most likely hormone replacement and we all knew that the advantage would disappear when testosterone levels subside. One side effect is slower metabolism.....

      Gwen - 2011-08-17 10:43

Testosterone levels outside the prescribed range result in automatic disqualification under the IAAF's rules, even if there is no question that the athlete is a woman and even if the raised testosterone levels are entirely natural. Mary Decker Slaney was disqualified under this rule even though she claimed that her high testosterone levels were the normal and natural result of pre-menopausal changes (she was in her late thirties at the time). The ruling was that this would make no difference - the disqualification is automatic even where there is no fault on the part of the athlete. The fact that Caster wasn't disqualified under these rules, but was investigated under a different set of rules, leads to the inescapable inference that her testosterone levels did not exceed the permissible level.

      Totman - 2011-08-17 11:06

I think you right. That is what usually happens. I think they must also look at the way she get manage and coach. Maybe Potch wants her. I believe there are a couple of good coaches and some clever people that can address this problem.

  • Gpurs - 2011-08-17 10:19

When you look and talk like she did how do you not know something is wrong with you ??? She will be uncompetitive now. Its called lack of testosterone, this happens when you surgically remove the internal testes she was born with!!!

  • Foreigner - 2011-08-17 10:33

So what's with the shoulder rubbing stunt each time she wins an event? Looks down-right stupid and arrogant. Only a lunatic does that. But then again considering what this article is saying, lunacy is definitely one her strong character points.

      daaivark - 2011-08-17 10:59

Many sports people have little physical tics. Some chuck tennis rackets. Some probably fart from excitement. Where does lunacy come into it? Methinks you seem a bit biased. I wonder why.

Flash in the pan and will be known not for her achievement but the fact, is she a man or woman and how Athletics SA and Julius TOTALLY cocked up her career, politics and sport don't work well.

      RGL - 2011-08-17 15:26

How true. She cannot be blamed for the way she was born, but ASA & Malema & co can surely be blamed for the manner in which it was dealt ! I understand why people point and snigger. It's not really at her, rather at the ASA & Malema and other who tried to gain points using her. Idiots !

  • jeremy - 2011-08-17 11:08

I've watched her in a couple of recent Diamond League 800m races. She finished right at the back of the field - and it was embarrassing to hear the commentators referring to her "lumbering" around the track.Although, to be honest, it's equally embarrassing watching a "woman" with a moustache and a deep voice competing at all. Hopefully, for the sake of SA's diminishing credibility, she'll fade away from athletics.

  • Jubes - 2011-08-17 11:11

  • Hmfffffff - 2011-08-17 11:17

Ha...... it is a different story when you are not full of testosterone. Semenya now "YOU" will truly feel what it is like to really "run" as a "woman" and what it "means" to be a woman in every sense of the word. I still believe you did not deserve your medal, you really should give it back, prove yourself as a woman by competing fairly, then you can graciously keep any medal you get. hmfffff

      Clarissa - 2011-08-17 14:37

What would you do if u were born as a two in one person? And, then ur parents raise you as either one?? And, then u excell in a sport, you win and then everyone hates you because you are good/ great but look diffrent. She did not even know she had internal testes....at the age of 18. Put youself in her shoes before you judge, for those who judge does not define others, they only define themselves ...

  • Brian Smith - 2011-08-17 11:23

It is absolutely obvious that she is on treatment to control her testosterone level resulting in weight gain and loss of strength. It is exactly the same with people who get Zoladex for prostate problems. She will never return to what she was as can be seen with her recent runs.

  • Biko Lives - 2011-08-17 11:24

Leanord Chuene was the only guy who cared abou the well being of Caster! Whoever this white messiah named Jukka Härkönen is he must be fired or chased out of the country! Because he has shown that he is no different from his masters who were here before him of exploiting our natural resources and leaving them in shembles!!

      Zaq - 2011-08-17 11:42

Leonard Chuene cared about Leonard Chuene and no one ells!!

      FJ2 - 2011-08-17 18:01

Härkönen is obviously a shark. But Leonard Chuene cared about Caster?! He threw her to the wolves!

  • Andrew - 2011-08-17 11:33

Whether he is a she or not Caster remains a person with opinions and feelings. It is little wonder that the wheels are falling off given what this athlete has been through. Her entire gender issue was dragged through the national press for months on end, don't think that would make me very happy or inspire me to greater heights. I just feel sorry for her, she was abused a pawn for some individuals to further their own narrow minded agendas, on both sides of the fence for that matter. Still people continue to speculate with unfounded statements like gender corrective surgery etc. When will they leave her alone?

      charley - 2011-08-17 13:25

But he / she chose to run in the spotlight, and I am quite sure knowing he / she wasn't a 'full' womanand therefore was a fraud, so he / she must take the heat that goes with it. In that respect I don't feel sorry for her / him, and never deserved the medal she won.

      BM123 - 2011-08-17 18:22

Disagree Charley. She comes from a rural village, has been brought up as a girl, has external female genitals - how on earth was she supposed to know there was anything "wrong"? Once she knew the situation and if she has had hormone treatment / surgery then she's taken steps to comply with what the IAAF require. I hope she manages to come through this with the help of advisers and a coach who really care about her.

  • Susan - 2011-08-17 12:15

This reads like a gossip article... great journalism!

      jeremy - 2011-08-17 14:08

Granted, it's a bit heavy on rumour - but Caster's weight problem speaks for itself as do her recent 800 metre times. I suspect the problem for journalists right now is that no-one is prepared to speak, so the journalist has to fly a kite in the hope that someone in the know will break cover....

  • Gerald - 2011-08-17 13:34

  • WhiteFight - 2011-08-17 15:50

Wow that guy got fat after having his balls removed! Its a fact that testosterone (which is produced in the testes) elevates metabolism and keeps one lean. Perhaps they should put them back?

Are we going to sit here and ignore the fact that Semenya made a deal with the track and field governing body to get her testosterone levels down. The deal that she made allows her to compete and make money as long as her testosterone levels are below a certain level. I don't know if she had surgery for this, or she took drugs to get her T levels down. But she did something. And the effects of are showing that maybe she really was just a medicore 1:55 male athlete before. And now she is a struggling 2:01 female athlete.
