Cape Town - Runners still wishing to enter the 2011 Comrades Marathon will be left disappointed. The 18,000 cap that was imposed by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has been reached and entries officially closed after reaching the cap just before 12:00 on Tuesday, 30 November 2010.
Runners who have posted their entry form by close of business on the 30th of November 2010, and which have been postmarked by the Post Office will still be accepted.
No late entries will be allowed and no correspondence will be entered into. The CMA will release the official entry figure once these entries have been received and captured.
Interest in the Rainbow Nation’s premier sporting event received a boost after obtaining official recognition by the Guinness World Records for being the world’s biggest ultra-marathon. This was a result of 14,343 runners making it to the finish line within the 12-hour cut-off time in the Comrades 2010 run.
Having Comrades Ambassadors in many countries worldwide has also helped showcase The Ultimate Human Race as a premier road-running fixture on the global sporting arena.
These Ambassadors live out their passion for the ultra-marathon by promoting the amazing race amongst their countrymen and women. This has resulted in a surge in international participation in the Comrades Marathon in recent years.
Comrades 2011 will be an ‘up-run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 29 May 2011, starting outside the Durban City Hall at 05:30 and ending at The Cricket Oval in Pietermaritzburg, 12 hours later.
Says CMA Race Director Johan van Staden: ‘We have unfortunately had to cap the number of participants in next years 86th running of the Comrades Marathon. This is mainly due to us wanting to ensure the health and safety of all competitors in the ultra-marathon and set the pace for a good race.’
He adds: ‘Essentially, it is the runners who make the Comrades Marathon the attraction that it is today. We salute each one of you and look forward to wishing you well at the start of next year’s run. Furthermore, we wish you all the best in your qualifying marathon.’
