Johannesburg - Peter Muthubi of the Nedbank Running Club, has been promoted to 10th place in this year's Comrades marathon following the disqualification of third placed Sergio Moetsoneng who tested positive for an illegal substance.
Muthubi was understandably very disappointed with his 11th placed finish on race day after showing great courage and determination on the road. "I am a happy man today because the Comrades Marathon makes sure the race is a true and a respected race," said a proud Muthubi.
With the disqualification of Sergio Moetsoneng all the runners finishing from fourth to 11th were moved up one place in the finishing order, to complete the gold medal list.
No stranger to controversy, Sergio Moetsoneng, along with his twin brother Arnold, was also disqualified from the 1999 Comrades and banned for competing for five years.
The Moetsoneng twins attempted to finish the race in relay fashion and may have succeeded was it not for the fact they wore their watches on opposite arms.
A minor detail which led to their discovery by observant supporters of the Comrades.
