Sandes heading to Hong Kong

Cape Town - South African trail running super phenomenon, Ryan Sandes, will be packing his bags and heading to Hong Kong in early February for the Vibram Hong Kong 100 Ultra Marathon.

The 100km course starts in Pak Tam Chung on the Sai Kung Peninsula and covers some of the most beautiful scenery in Hong Kong, including remote and unspoilt beaches, ancient forests, nature trails, reservoirs and steep hills.

“My 2012 trail season starts off quite early this year (mid Feb) with a 100km mountain ultra race in Hong Kong. I am super excited as everyone I have spoken with has told me just how beautiful Hong Kong is," said Sandes.

"I am a little bit nervous as I am not quite sure what to expect terrain, weather and competition wise, but I have no doubt the Vibram Hong Kong 100km ultra will be an awesome but hard race.

“My training has gone well and I am starting to feel strong and fit again after a festive Christmas break. My main focus in Hong Kong is to have a solid race and use it as preparation for the Western Sates 100miler in the US later this year. I am also looking forward to exploring some new trails and experiencing the Hong Kong culture.”

With over 750 registered competitors from 28 countries, this year’s race is set to be thrilling for both competitors and spectators.

Sandes's competition includes 2010 winner William Davis and runner up Jeremy Ritcey. The course is based around Hong Kong's famous Maclehose Trail, but with some diversions to ensure that runners spend more time in its most scenic sections, as well as finishing with the descent from Hong Kong's highest peak (Tai Mo Shan).

The course involves a cumulative elevation gain of over 4500 meters and the cut-off time is 32 hours.

The Vibram Hong Kong 100 is a qualifying event for the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (3 points) and (sub 14 hours) the Western States 100.

The race starts on Saturday 18 February 2012 at 8:00 local Hong Kong time and cut off time is 32 hours later at 16:00 on Sunday 19 February 2012, local Hong Kong time.
